Bryson DeChambeau’s final round at The Masters started as well as he could’ve imagined, but it all went wrong soon after.

After a par at the first hole – Rory McIlroy made double bogey – and a birdie at the second, DeChambeau suddenly had the lead.

Unfortunately, he then made back-to-back bogeys, and it became apparent that his game wasn’t where it needed to be to win the Green Jacket.

The American ended up one over on the front nine and two over on the back nine and fell to joint fifth on the leaderboard alongside Sungjae Im.

DeChambeau revealed afterwards that his practice on the driving range before the final round didn’t go to plan.

Bryson DeChambeau reveals what happened on the driving range before final round at The Masters

DeChambeau’s iron play was his biggest issue throughout The Masters this week, while his scrambling was absolutely fantastic.

The American spent lots of time on the range before and after his rounds, trying to give himself as much confidence as possible in his game.

However, his efforts to do that on Sunday, ahead of his final round showdown with McIlroy, didn’t go as well as he would’ve liked.

He admitted to the media that his iron play was also struggling earlier in the day: “Hmm, okay. It just wasn’t tight and wasn’t dialed in. I kept hitting the heel.

“It’s something that I’ve been actually working on with LA Golf and we got some irons in that’s got some more weight on the toe which helps dramatically. But we haven’t got the front edge just right yet.

“I can’t wait. You’re going to see some new equipment here very, very soon, which hopefully will optimize my game to an even greater level. Super excited about it, actually.”

Bryson DeChambeau picks his worst shot in final round at The Masters

It was a difficult day for DeChambeau, to say the least. Other than McIlroy, he was probably the only man to wake up on Sunday thinking he was going to win The Masters.

Instead, his opportunity to win the Green Jacket was effectively gone after his double bogey at the 11th hole.

He had struggled with pulling iron shots left throughout the round, and he hit his worst one at the wrong time, finding the water next to the green.

He reflected on his biggest mistake: “My 9-iron on 11. I just tried to hit a draw in there and it started five degrees left, and I’m like, you’ve got to be kidding me.

“That’s not what I saw. Then I did the same thing on 17 out of the pine straw. Just went dead left on me. Got to get better. More room for improvement. Excited, though. Thank you, guys.”
