Round one of the PGA Championship is in the bag but rather than things be all about the exciting golf potentially on display, instead, we’re seeing plenty of discourse around mud balls.

With rain all week at Quail Hollow, the course was still in fine condition but players struggled to get any run on their drives, while balls also picked up debris and mud along the way.

However, the PGA decided not to enforce a lift, clean and place rule, causing plenty of headaches for players as they struggled to navigate the course.

Indeed, a frustrated Xander Schauffele suggested things might get worse, while world number one Scottie Scheffler lamented the PGA of America as well.

Now, though, Bryson DeChambeau has had his say on the issue and it seems that unlike Scheffler and Schauffele, the LIV Golf star is simply dealing with it.

Bryson DeChambeau issues verdict on ‘mud balls’ after day one of the PGA Championship

ESPN journalist Paolo Uggetti was on hand on the course to get DeChambeau’s thoughts on the mud-ball issue.

And while some players have bemoaned the problem, DeChambeau offered a more reasonable take as he simply suggested it’s the same for everyone.

“You just have to manage your ball a little bit better. It’s not easy. I hit a couple shots where the ball is over curving and you just have to go, ‘Ok I got to play it out more one way’… everybody has to deal with it,” DeChambeau said.

With DeChambeau’s response always likely to get traction and cause a stir, former major winner Trevor Immelman responded on X, and showed support for the American.

With round two set to get underway, it will be interesting to see if the PGA change their mind.

Bryson DeChambeau is spot on as PGA Tour stars make excuses

It’s a fair point that the likes of Scheffler and Schauffele make and at top level sport, it must be frustrating.

However, the conditions are the same for every single player and at the end of the day, none of that super group, which also included Rory McIlroy, played well.

Furthermore, the players are also being helped by long rough, something which actually prevented a few of them from posting even worse scores.

This is very much a case of just getting on with things and as DeChambeau says, everyone is dealing with it.
