Bryson DeChambeau is expected to play a key role for the United States during the Ryder Cup next month, but he could face one huge problem at Bethpage Black.
Amazingly, DeChambeau qualified for the US Ryder Cup team from just eight events – all of the majors over the past two seasons.
Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley described DeChambeau’s accomplishment as ‘unheard of’ and he’s spot on there.
The 31-year-old has actually managed to improve since he joined LIV Golf, and the same can’t be said for too many players.
His game is actually perfectly suited to Bethpage Black, given his enormous length off the tee.
However, Brandel Chamblee has highlighted how DeChambeau has been notoriously difficult to find a suitable Ryder Cup partner for.
There is seemingly a reason why that is the case as well.
Bryson DeChambeau’s equipment issue leaves him one potential Ryder Cup partner
DeChambeau is well known for his scientific approach to the game.
He leaves no stone unturned on his never-ending quest for perfection.

And Smylie Kaufman has pointed out how that could be a big problem for him at Bethpage Black next month.
When speaking on the Smylie Show, Kaufman suggested that the golf ball used by DeChambeau could be an issue when trying to find a partner for him.
He said: “I think it’s interesting with Bryson, You know how meticulous he is with everything, right?
“The golf ball, you know, he’s always trying to change a lot of things.
“I think confusing Bryson with a different golf ball is something that I think would be interesting. I don’t know if Bryson played foursomes at Whistling Straits. Part of me feels like he just played four-ball that week.
“So for Bryson, you would need to pair him up with someone who uses a golf ball that he would be able to trust.
“I think Cam Young and him play a similar golf ball. That is where I would like to start with Bryson, just because of his equipment.
“That could be a team. Just having Cam’s mellowness but also the New York crowd that he could get hype off of, but I think that could potentially be a good team. They both hit it long, I mean, they could be something at Bethpage.“
Bryson DeChambeau’s Ryder Cup record and what his history tells us
DeChambeau will be making his third Ryder Cup appearance for the United States next month.
But how has he fared in his previous two appearances?
Here is his overall record from the two appearances he has made in the Ryder Cup at Paris National and Whistling Straits:
| Ryder Cup | Points won | Overall record |
| 2018 | 0 | 0-3-0 |
| 2021 | 2.5 | 2-0-1 |
| Total | 2.5 | 2-3-1 |
And here is a comparison between his record in the foursomes and four-ball formats.
| Year | Format | Playing partner | Opponent | Result |
| 2018 | Foursomes | Phil Mickelson | Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren | L 5&4 |
| 2018 | Foursomes | Tiger Woods | Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari | L 5&4 |
| 2021 | Fourballs | Scottie Scheffler | Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton | AS |
| 2021 | Fourballs | Scottie Scheffler | Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland | W 3&1 |
It’s clear to see that DeChambeau has been far better at the Ryder Cup when partnering up with someone while playing his own ball, rather than the alternate shot format.
It would be no surprise at all to see Bradley use him just three times at the Ryder Cup next month, in the two four-ball matches and of course, the Sunday singles.
