Brooks Koepka was not the happiest of golfers after he let slip a fine start at the US Open to only go into the clubhouse at level par.

The five-time major winner had got himself into a superb position under par but then let it slip on the back nine to card a level 70.

Of course, Koepka knows how to win a major tournament and level par is nothing to be ashamed of really on what was a tough day at Pinehurst.

More intriguing, however, was Koepka’s decision to not speak to the media afterwards.

The American decided against his press duties and instead headed off with his wife and son, Crew.

However, Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch did manage to get an interview via text with Koepka and, while there were some normal questions thrown in, there was also some fiery replies from the LIV star.

Brooks Koepka shares what he thinks the winning score will be at the US Open

In one of the more ‘normal’ questions from the interview with Lynch, Koepka was asked what sort of score he feels will get the job done this weekend.

And although he did answer with a touch of sarcasm, Koepka did at least give a number.

“Yes, the best one. Tough to tell. Depends if wind picks up or it’s firmer. I’d say 4-under wins,” Koepka said.

As it stands, Patrick Cantlay is in the clubhouse at five under par while Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau are in firmly in the mix as well, along with Ludvig Aberg on four under.

Quite whether any of those players can go out tomorrow and shoot a similar score to really take the bull by the horns, remains to be seen.

But Koepka is a man who knows his golf and knows what the majors are all about.

For the likes of Cantlay and DeChambeau, then, Koepka’s words here will offer encouragement going into the next three rounds.
