Scott O’Neil appears to have taken a page from the book of his predecessor Greg Norman by claiming that LIV Golf is the place to see the best players in the world.
Of course, LIV Golf has never been afraid to make big claims and upset the apple cart within the golfing world. For a long time, LIV seemed to be quite content to go along with the idea that all publicity was helpful to some degree.
The appointment of Scott O’Neil as the new CEO however, appeared to be a sign that LIV was getting more serious about becoming a more credible tour as talks over a deal with the PGA Tour continue.
It appeared to be a positive sign for the game coming back together that Greg Norman was moved on. But O’Neil has now made a statement which has seen LIV come in for plenty of ridicule.
Brandel Chamblee hits out at LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil
O’Neil suggested during their event in Adelaide that LIV boasted the ‘best players in the world’; seemingly claiming that they had the strongest leaderboards outside of the majors.

Plenty of fans mocked O’Neil’s comments. And there has been a similar response from Brandel Chamblee, with the analyst pointing out that it would be easier to make that kind of claim had LIV players not performed so poorly in the majors in 2024.
An unnecessary own goal from LIV Golf
LIV do boast an impressive amount of quality at the top of their league. Clearly, the PGA Tour would love to have the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau back playing in their events.
And it would be naive to pretend that the PGA Tour is completely leaving them behind right now. The tour, as a whole, does not appear to have benefitted from providing a stage that gives their best players little reason to consider jumping ship.
But LIV has nothing like the depth of the PGA Tour. A lot of their events are still played on quite forgettable golf courses, while it seems that they do not know whether to give the individual or team titles more focus.
In truth, many would have probably criticised O’Neil even if he had been correct in his comments. LIV remains deeply unpopular with many golf fans. With that, it seemed such a foolish thing to do at a time when the league probably does have a few things to be more optimistic about.
