The 2025 season is threatening to provide one of the best stretches of major championship golf for some time, with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler winning the first two events of the year.

The golfing world was truly spoiled at The Masters, with Rory McIlroy putting everyone on a rollercoaster as he looked to finally complete the career grand slam. Even when he holed the birdie putt to win the playoff against Justin Rose, viewers would have been forgiven for asking themselves if there was any way the Northern Irishman could still lose.

The PGA Championship did not deliver the same drama. However, it did see Scottie Scheffler remind everyone how he seems to have a gear that only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods had before him.

Perhaps it is recency bias, but it is incredibly hard to look past Scheffler ahead of the US Open later this month. He has won three times in his last four starts, while he has not finished outside the top eight in any of his last seven tournaments.

Brandel Chamblee asked what the winning score at the US Open will be

His four-shot victory at The Memorial Tournament was his least emphatic win of the season, scoring wise. Meanwhile, you have to go back to The Players Championship for the last time he shot a score worse than 72 in a round.

So perhaps it is no surprise that Brandel Chamblee has Scheffler as the man to beat at Oakmont.

In fact, when asked by a follower what score will win the US Open, Chamblee had a simple response…

The results of the previous nine US Opens at Oakmont

This year’s event will be the 10th time that Oakmont has hosted the US Open. No course has hosted the event more often.

And it certainly provides a stern test. There has been no worse winning score since Angel Cabrera finished on five under par back in 2007. Meanwhile, five under par is the best winning score the event has seen at Oakmont.

YearWinnerWinning Score
1927Tommy Armour+13
1935Sam Parks Jr. +11
1953Ben Hogan-5
1962Jack Nicklaus-1
1973Johnny Miller-5
1983Larry Nelson-4
1994Ernie Els-5
2007Angel Cabrera+5
2016Dustin Johnson-4
2025J.J. Spaun-1

Scheffler seems to thrive when the time comes to dig in and limit mistakes. And if he finds that Oakmont suits his eye, it could prove to be a pretty miserable week for everyone else in the field.
