It is probably fair to say that Rory McIlroy is unlikely to remember the 2025 PGA Championship with much fondness after his performance at Quail Hollow this week.

Rory McIlroy was hard to overlook heading into the PGA Championship. He had won three times on the PGA Tour in 2025, including at The Masters. And Quail Hollow is a golf course that the Northern Irishman has won four times on previously.

However, the 36-year-old has, understandably, not been the same player since triumphing at Augusta National. He was rusty at the Zurich Classic, while McIlroy did not play well at the Truist Championship heading into the second major of the year.

Ultimately, McIlroy never recovered from a slow start in North Carolina, and it proved to be an early finish for him on Sunday.

Of course, when McIlroy is in full flight, there are not too many sights better than watching him with the driver in hand. The five-time major champion is first on the PGA Tour for strokes gained off the tee.

But perhaps the tour has an even better player with the longest club in the bag, with Brandel Chamblee lauding the world number one…

Where Scottie Scheffler ranks for strokes gained off the tee on the PGA Tour

Scheffler is not known for being as exciting to watch off the tee. But crucially, the statistics do suggest that he is indeed alongside McIlroy with the driver in hand.

According to the PGA Tour website, Scheffler is currently second for strokes gained off the tee.

The 28-year-old was also in that position last year. But crucially, he is also inside the top 20 for strokes gained putting – a huge jump from where he was in 2024.

Scheffler is seemingly finding his best form once again, with a PGA Championship likely to be added to his list of achievements soon enough.

Meanwhile, golf fans are set to be in for a treat over the rest of 2025 with McIlroy and potentially Scheffler securing the first two majors of the year.
