While the PGA Tour got off to a slow start in 2025, it appears that things have jumped several gears after an incredibly exciting finish saw Rory McIlroy win the Players Championship for a second time.
Rory McIlroy triumphed at TPC Sawgrass after overcoming J.J. Spaun in a playoff on Monday. The tournament went right down to the wire on Sunday, with the Northern Irishman boasting a three-shot lead at one stage down the back nine, while Spaun left a birdie putt to win agonisingly short on the 72nd hole.
It was a fitting occasion for the flagship event on the PGA Tour. And it seems fair to say that the Players Championship completely overshadowed LIV Golf Singapore which took place at the weekend.
Certainly, Brandel Chamblee felt that the week was a huge victory for the PGA Tour.

Josh Carpenter noted that viewing figures for the final round were up from the previous year, with a peak audience of 6.2 million people watching at one stage on Sunday.

Carpenter went on to note on X that the playoff attracted ‘big, big number’ for a Monday morning, with 1.5 million people watching McIlroy get the victory.
And in response to Sunday’s numbers, Chamblee suggested that it was a further indication that LIV Golf is losing the battle between the two tours.
What LIV Golf desperately needs during major championship season with the PGA Tour boasting the momentum
The momentum is definitely with the PGA Tour right now. They have just had two of their biggest tournaments, culminating with arguably their biggest star – other than Tiger Woods – winning at Sawgrass.
Meanwhile, LIV has not had Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau or Brooks Koepka win any of their first four events. Their ratings have probably suffered from the league not playing in the Western Hemisphere yet either.
Lee Trevino hinted believing that LIV was dying while at the Players Championship. And it definitely does feel that they need another of their players to win a major as soon as possible to give the league a little more credibility.
A real statement would be one of their players who has not yet won a major clinching one of the sport’s four biggest prizes. That would go a little way to silencing some of their critics.
