Billy Horschel endured a disastrous finish to his second round of the Cognizant Classic on Friday afternoon.

Horschel was actually in great shape midway through his second round of the Cognizant Classic before disaster struck on the 15th hole.

The 39-year-old American made a triple bogey six before dropping shots at 17 and 18 as well as he slipped from five-under-par to even-par during his final four holes at PGA National.

Horschel clashed with a fan at the Cognizant Classic after he found the water with his second shot on the 15th hole.

He was involved in a lengthy debate with the spectator, who is believed to have taken issue with the eight-time PGA Tour winner’s criticism of PGA National before the tournament began.

Horschel suggested that the overseeded Bermuda grass made the golf course play easier than it should before the start of the Cognizant Classic.

In fact, numerous players said the same thing, including Shane Lowry.

However, it was local boy Horschel who bore the brunt of criticism from the spectators.

Rory McIlroy could learn from Billy Horschel’s behavior at the Cognizant Classic

Horschel must have been fuming after dropping five shots in his final four holes. He looked completely lost as he walked off the 18th green after his second round.

He went from being in contention to just about sneaking in to make the cut, and he probably wouldn’t have slept very well on Friday night as a result.

However, he deserves huge praise for what he did immediately after his round, and Rory McIlroy could really learn something from the American.

Last season, the Northern Irishman was embroiled in huge controversy after he refused to speak to the media after six consecutive major rounds.

It surely wasn’t a coincidence that he didn’t play well at all in any of those rounds.

In fact, McIlroy received a great deal of criticism for his disappointing behavior throughout the 2025 season.

Interestingly, golf’s governing bodies have been told that they need to nip McIlroy’s behavior in the bud quickly, because fans deserve to hear what their heroes have to say.

After all, golf is a sport built on integrity and honor. Players speaking to the media after a poor round is actually far more important than reeling off plenty of cliches after they’ve played well.

It’s all about the example that players like McIlroy are setting to their young fans as well. If they just don’t bother with their duties after a bad day at work, then what kind of message does that send to young people?

The good news is that there are players like Horschel out there who continue to set the right example.

Not only did he speak to the media after his round but he opened up in depth about how he played and the altercation with the fan on the 15th hole.

Horschel provided a fascinating insight into what PGA Tour players go through when they’re heckled from spectators.

It would have been so easy for Horschel to duck out of facing the media after his second round at the Cognizant Classic.

He could have headed home immediately to digest his awful finish at PGA National.

However, he chose to speak to the press and he answered all questions that were sent his way.

Rory McIlroy should look at Horschel’s classy behavior and learn from it in 2026 and beyond.
