Billy Horschel has proven a hit with European fans after appearing in three DP World Tour events during the autumn stretch of the season.

Horschel won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth before also competing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Open De France at Le Golf National.

Horschel’s DP World Tour exploits have been praised, and perhaps more US-based players should replicate the 37-year-old in the coming years. The American has been part of an exciting stretch of golf on the European circuit, and tour officials will no doubt be pleased with how the showcase events have gone since the start of September.

Events like the BMW PGA Championship, Irish Open, Spanish Open and Alfred Dunhill attract strong fields, and Horschel believes the DP World Tour’s standing within world golf is clear.

Speaking during his pre-tournament press duties on Tuesday, Horschel claimed the DP World Tour standard is still the second-best within world golf, ahead of the LIV Golf League.

“I love this tour. I think the world of this tour. But at the same time, I don’t support this tour 20-plus events out of the year,” Horschel explained.

“Obviously, the PGA Tour is where I play mostly, but I want to make sure that these guys understand how special this tour is, how special I think it is, and then what I think of them as golfers. I think they are really great players out here.

“I think it’s honestly—quality and talent-wise—the second-best tour in the world, and you see it on a regular basis. And the more I come over here, the more I’m impressed by the way these guys play on TV. I always have, but when you see it in person, you get a better perspective of the players.”

LIV Golf must up game amid DP World Tour boom

It’s hard to disagree with Horschel’s remarks. Unfortunately, the LIV Golf League doesn’t have the depth of talent to match the DP World Tour.

Furthermore, LIV golf players are present at nearly every single DP World Tour event. When the likes of Horschel and Rory McIlroy are also thrown into the mix, the strength of the field almost reaches Signature Event standards on the PGA Tour.

In its current guise, LIV has too many big names that aren’t performing at their best: Phil Mickelson, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Bubba Watson are four excellent examples.

Moving forward, further high-profile signings must be made to raise the breakaway venture’s inconsistent standard.
