Billy Horschel has outlined the change he would like to make to the PGA Tour as he shared what he has always found weird about the current structure.

The PGA Tour has undergone all sorts of changes since Billy Horschel earned his card ahead of the 2010 season. Despite the claims of Scott O’Neil, the PGA Tour remains the home of the majority of the best players on the planet.

However, that does not mean that Brian Rolapp has not got a tough job on his hands as the new CEO.

The PGA Tour has come in for a lot of criticism in recent years. And one of the biggest complaints has been the tour becoming more of a closed shop.

Lucas Glover admitted he will not speak to Rolapp amid frustrations over how difficult it is for players further down the food chain to join the top stars. Just 100 players will automatically keep their cards this year, which leaves those not in the signature events facing an uphill battle.

And it seems that Horschel has a similar concern to Glover. Speaking to Fried Egg Golf about the tweaks that he would make to the tour, the 38-year-old insisted that it needs to be more of a level-playing field.

“Ideally I think you have about 25 events per year, and I would make every event equal. I don’t know if it actually works where every event has the same purse and offers the same number of points because when you go to bigger markets – Chicago, Philly, New York, Boston, LA – they are going to put up more money because it’s a bigger market and they want to be the premier event,” he said.

“But I say we go to a 25-event schedule where we try to make every event the same. Every tournament has a 120-man field. It’s a smaller tour, but it gives every member of the PGA Tour the full ability to play all 25 events. From the time I got on Tour, I’ve always said that it’s weird to not be guaranteed a spot in every open PGA Tour event as a member of the Tour.

“If there is a way to create a tour where every full-status PGA Tour member is guaranteed to play every PGA Tour event that is open, it would benefit both the PGA Tour as an organization and the players themselves.”

Billy Horschel provides a fitness update after returning from injury

Horschel spent around five months on the sidelines due to a hip injury. It all but ended his hopes of making a Ryder Cup team for the first time.

He finished outside the top 50 at the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour – a title he was defending at Wentworth – and the Baycurrent Classic. However, the good news is that he confirmed that he has not experienced any setbacks.

“The hip is really good. It’s been nice to get back out and play some golf. The perfectionist in me doesn’t take satisfactory results very well and my first two events have been just okay, but I have to understand it’s only been six months since surgery,” he added.

Horschel will hope that he is able to make up for lost time in 2026 and perhaps push to make the Presidents Cup team at Medinah.
