Billy Horschel is back in DP World Tour action this week as the season-ending finale takes place at Jumeirah Golf Estates Earth Course in Dubai.

The American’s end to the season has been positive. Horschel won the BMW PGA Championship before also competing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the Open De France.

Horschel has set an example for PGA Tour players who have perhaps been reluctant to travel to Europe for what is an iconic stretch of the season.

The 37-year-old has proven to be a popular figure in Europe, particularly among UK fans; many were willing him on during the dramatic Wentworth playoff against Rory McIlroy.

Horschel has great respect for McIlroy, and the American has lauded one part of the Northern Irishman’s game.

Speaking during a clip shared by Golf Monthly, Horschel was asked to build his perfect golfer, and the American was quick to name McIlroy as his perfect player off the tee.

The 2024 BMW PGA Championship winner was asked: “Off the tee?”

Horschel replied: “Rory McIlroy.”

Interviewer added: “Irons?” Horschel: “I mean, in his heyday, Tiger was the best.”

Horschel also went on to name LIV Golf star Cameron Smith as the best around the greens and himself with the putter in hand.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour driving statistics

The statistics completely back up Horschel’s claim about McIlroy’s driving. The Northern Irishman is currently averaging 1.239 strokes per round tee-to-green, which is the sixth-highest on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy is actually ranked fourth for strokes gained off the tee, which demonstrates just how vital the four-time major winner’s driving is to his game.

As the golfing world knows, McIlroy is one of the biggest hitters, and the Northern Irishman currently ranks second on the PGA Tour behind Cameron Champ.

During the 2024 season, McIlroy averaged 320 yards off the tee and a long drive of 423 yards. The Northern Irishman’s big-hitting is on display in Dubai this weekend, with firm fairways and hot air propelling his tee shots well over the 320-yard mark.
