Billy Horschel added his name to the multiple time winners of the BMW PGA Championship by beating Rory McIlroy in a playoff at Wentworth today.

The American managed to get himself into contention over the last few holes and after a pulsating playoff involving McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence, Horschel came out on top.

Horschel managed to hole a number of big putts throughout the tournament and he holed a huge one on the playoff hole for eagle to see off McIlroy, who made birdie.

Of course, making putts and being good around the greens is one of the biggest parts of golf for any player at any level.

And discussing his work on the greens, Horschel has suggested his putting is up there with the best in the world right now.

Billy Horschel says he’s one of the best putters in the world after BMW PGA win

Speaking to the media following his nerve-wracking win over, Horschel was delighted with how his game was over the four days and in the playoff holes.

And speaking about his putting, Horschel claimed he is one of the best around.

“Yeah, the putter has been good. I feel I’m one of the best putters in the world,” Horschel said.

“Once I start seeing one or two go in, it start fuelling my confidence even more and I had to rely on it. Because like I said I didn’t stripe it or strike it as well as I would have wanted.

“I had to make a lot of 20-footers for birdies everything and. But it bailed me out when I needed it.”

Horschel putting claim backed up by stats

While he’s not the number one player on the PGA Tour by any means – that is officially Aaron Baddeley according to strokes gained stats – Horschel us among the top guys.

Horschel sits at 21st in that strokes gained metric and that is no disgrace at all.

Horschel is also in the top 30 for least putts taken per round and you could see that class and ability on display all week this week at Wentworth.

The focus for Horschel will be to win a major next year and crucially, get himself on the Ryder Cup team for Bethpage Black.

On this form, he’s well on the way to doing that.
