Billy Foster shares the one tournament he would have refused to work if he was ever asked to be Tiger Woods’ caddie

When it comes to the most daunting jobs for a caddie to have, it does appear that working with Tiger Woods has to be up there – with the 15-time major champion clearly having the highest standards possible during his career.

Of course, you do not get to the level Tiger Woods reached without having one of the finest minds in the game. No-one will have known his game better than Woods himself.

That obviously takes a lot of pressure off of Woods’ caddie. But clearly, overruling Woods’ view on a club selection or a shot shape would have taken a lot of courage.

Billy Foster has worked with a number of big characters during his long career. He spent time with Seve Ballesteros later on in his own career, while he was on the bag for Lee Westwood when he reached world number one. And he was alongside Matthew Fitzpatrick when he won the US Open in 2022.

Billy Foster shares which event he would not caddie for Tiger Woods in

Foster and Woods have worked together, at the 2005 Presidents Cup. But it turns out there would have been one event Foster would never carry the bag for Woods in – if he had been given the chance.

Speaking on The 19th Uncut, Foster insisted that there is absolutely no way that he would put himself in a position to come up against the Europeans in the Ryder Cup.

“No, not a chance. I don’t have to think about that. There’s not a chance on earth, would I ever caddie for America against Europe in the Ryder Cup. I’ve actually caddied for Tiger in the Presidents Cup, but that’s different. But the European Tour, it’s been my whole life,” he said.

“I promise you if I’d got Tiger’s job, the first thing I’d have said to him, I’d said, ‘right, I’d love to caddie for you, Tiger, but let’s get something straight, when it comes to the Ryder Cup, you’ll have to get somebody else, because I’ll be cheering against you’. I couldn’t do it.”

The permanent caddies Tiger Woods has had during his career

Of course, the latest person to carry the bag for Woods was his daughter Sam, in the PNC Championship. It was so nearly a hugely successful weekend for the Woods family, as they were beaten in a playoff by Bernhard Langer and his son Jason.

For the large majority of his career, it was Steve Williams who caddied for Woods. Together they won 13 major titles before parting ways in 2011.

Elsewhere, both Mike Cowan and Joe LaCava helped Woods to one major title each, with the pair working with arguably the greatest of all-time at opposite ends of his career.
