Justin Thomas’ performance at the WM Phoenix Open over the years very much mirrors how the last few seasons have gone for the two-time major champion.

Justin Thomas is one of the big names in the field for the WM Phoenix Open this week, with only Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama, Wyndham Clark ahead of him in the world rankings.

Thomas was arguably one of the most intriguing players heading into the 2025 PGA Tour season. His last victory on tour came back in 2022, and there have been plenty of struggles along the way. However, his performance at the Hero World Challenge hinted that the 31-year-old is gradually getting back to his best.

He finished in the middle of the pack at both The Sentry and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. However, those results came either side of a runner-up finish at The American Express.

Justin Thomas backed for a strong week at the WM Phoenix Open

Thomas has four top 10s at the Phoenix Open over the years. And speaking on Golf Channel, Arron Oberholser suggested that he could definitely see Thomas end his current wait for a win in the coming days.

“He is close. You can sit up here and say he’s close, he’s close. And for the most part every PGA Tour player is close because they are that good. It’s just a thought here or a feel there away from being their old selves. But based on the results I have seen from Justin this year and his shot shapes and what he is doing with these clubs right here, his iron play and wedge play, he is really close,” he said.

“I wouldn’t doubt it if he contended this week and actually won this week. I wouldn’t doubt it in the least. In fact, if you gave me three picks he would probably be one of my three picks this week right now.

“He has got to clean up the driver but if he can find the fairways this week and let these clubs shine he is always dangerous.”

How Thomas has performed at the Phoenix Open over the years

Thomas has been an ever-present in Phoenix since 2015. And he did get off to a rocky start in the event, missing two of the first three cuts at TPC Scottsdale.

However, his worst finish since 2019 is tied for 13th. And it seems that you could make a fairly educated prediction regarding the score Thomas will shoot this week.

Justin Thomas’ Phoenix Open record

He has shot between 12 and 14 under par in each of the last six stagings of the tournament. So it should certainly come as no surprise at all if he is able to put himself in the mix.

And Oberholser will not be alone in backing him for glory in Phoenix.
