There are a number of players who must have slightly mixed feelings about playing in the same era as Tiger Woods – with Adam Scott potentially one of those.

Of course, most players have a lot to thank Tiger Woods for, with the 15-time major champion changing the game when he emerged onto the scene. But obviously, Woods’ dominance probably prevented a lot of players from winning as many tournaments as they will feel they had the talent to do.

Adam Scott is one of those who could have easily won more than one major, with the Australian also reaching world number one just over a decade ago.

Scott made his major championship debut at the 2000 Open Championship, during a run of events which became known as the Tiger Slam, as Woods went on to hold all four titles at the same time.

How Tiger Woods would play mind games with Adam Scott

Scott would win the Players Championship in 2003 and the Tour Championship three years later. So he was certainly one of the best in the world during that spell when Woods was so far clear of everyone else.

And speaking to Grant Horvat, Scott shared what it was like to play alongside Woods – and deal with some of the mind games the American would play.

“Yeah, I played a bunch with him in practice rounds and stuff. I played a practice round with him that week of The Open at St Andrews in 2000. It was nuts, I was 19,” he said.

“Every area of his game was better than everyone else’s. Even his short game was like Phil Mickelson-esque. And then that ran across the board: driving, irons, putting, everything. But then, everything that went on around, the Tiger mania it was called back then, it was just so much. It was so new to golf, or at least me at that point. I just don’t think we’d seen anything like that. It was wild to be around.

“[If you were a threat to him] he would just play games with you [in practice rounds]. He’d hit the wrong club. He’d challenge you. You’d hit a good shot and he’s like, ‘but can you draw it and hold it up against the wind like that?’ And you can’t. Just to make you feel inferior. He was a gamesman, he was the ultimate competitor.”

What Adam Scott did which reminded Butch Harmon of Tiger Woods

It is amazing that Woods even felt the need to try and intimidate some of those he battled with. He had a number of the greatest seasons of all-time, and there is no question that his best would see everyone else completely left behind at a tournament.

Butch Harmon once said Scott was the only player who could swing like Woods of those he ever coached, so perhaps Woods saw him as someone to look out for in the years to come.

Scott would actually only finish as a runner-up to Woods in one event – the 2006 WGC-American Express Championship. So it was far from being the biggest rivalry of Woods’ career.

But Scott must still be one of the players who wonders what his career would look like had he not been just a few years younger than arguably the greatest player the game has ever seen.
