Collin Morikawa played a rather unique shot during the first round of the ZOZO Championship at Accordia Narashino Country Club.

Morikawa is defending his 2023 ZOZO Championship title and carded a one-under 69 to get his tournament off to a solid start.

The American made an uncharacteristic double bogey on the par-five sixth but bounced back with three birdies to finish in the red.

Morikawa, however, has been doing the rounds on social media after playing a very unique second shot to the par-five 18th.

After a wayward 269-yard drive into the left bunker, Morikawa was left with a testing lie with the ball well below his feet.

The American needed to draw his ball around the trees to ensure his layup was in a good position. Morikawa managed to position himself well for his third but also fell over in the process after losing his balance.

The 27-year-old would go on to make par after getting down in three from 125 yards out and taking to X after his round, Morikawa sarcastically wrote: “How to hit a draw.”

Morikawa’s iron play is his strength, and it certainly bailed him out during the finishing hole at the ZOZO Championship.

Several big names struggle on day one of the ZOZO Championship

Morikawa won’t be overly pleased with his one-under-par opening round, but the American’s efforts were better than some of the other big names in the field.

Xander Schauffele endured a tough day and made an eight on the par-four ninth. The world number two finished the opening round three over and near the bottom of the field.

It was a similar story for Sahith Theegala and Max Homa, who both struggled their way to a 73. Justin Thomas was the standout performer after the American carded a four-under 66 in his first outing since the Tour Championship.

Fellow American Taylor Moore leads the way on seven under after mastering the testing conditions. A three-way tie for second has emerged behind Moore, and Kevin Yu sits T5 on five under.
