Padraig Harrington will go down as one of the top golfers of his generation, and also one of the most popular.

Harrington claimed three major championship victories in his prime, all of which arrived between 2007 and 2008.

The Irishman shone on the PGA Tour for many years, and has since turned his focus to the PGA Tour Champions.

He’s still impressing on the course, with Harrington claiming two wins in the 2025 season, including the US Senior Open Championship.

Padraig Harrington’s warm-up drill for golfers in a rush before playing

Looking after himself has clearly been a key factor behind the success of Harrington, who turned 54 in August.

And even when he hasn’t had time to warm up for tournaments, the veteran golfer still finds time to prepare properly.

Sharing a warm-up drill that amateurs can use when they find themselves in such a situation, he demonstrated on his YouTube channel in 2021: “So this is just a very quick tip for people who are at home, who are going out to the golf course as you do, you’ve pulled up in the car, you’ve got five minutes to your tee time, you’ve no way to go to the range, or you don’t have a range, you don’t have a net.

“So traditionally, as a kid I would have picked out two clubs out of the bag, and I would have got two clubs and I would have swung them back and forth.

“That’s heavy, and you’re learning to swing slow. It’s okay yeah, do that, maybe do a few stretches, get the club out, and get those turns going up and down, get that sort of going.

“But the drill I like the best now, if I don’t have time, that gets me up to speed to swinging is I take a golf ball, I do it one-handed, both hands and two-handed.

“So I get a two-handed swing, take my golf swing, and throw it as hard as I can here. That mimics the speed of swinging a golf club the best.

What golfers have said about Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour Champions

“It would be a thrill to see Tiger come out and play the Champions Tour, and I’m convinced he will play several. Depends how many. I’m going to gradually get older and older here, and I may not be at the very top of my game when he comes out, but he always moves the needle. He’s a very exciting personality to watch, and it would be fantastic for Tiger and for our tour to be competing out there, and I think all the players would welcome him.”

Bernhard Langer

“I’ve said, please come play. And I think it can only be beneficial to him. He will get himself in golf shape. You can ride a cart without any shame and if there was one guy that should be able to drive a cart, it’s him… and he can get his a** back in shape.”

Ernie Els

“I think it would be super for the [PGA Tour Champions] if Tiger is able to play. Great for sponsors, tv, etc. And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not.”

Colin Montgomerie

“It’s a good training drill for speed, but it gets me warmed up as quick as I can. It’s definitely the drill I would use… If you told me I have to hit a driver now at full speed and I wasn’t allowed to hit any warm-up shots, this is the drill I would do.

“Two-handed, and throw it into the ground behind my foot. Always behind my foot for speed. Here we’ve done this drill where we throw it down for technique, left shoulder up, right shoulder down, getting beautiful technique, throwing it straight that way.

“But for speed, I could do it one-handed, and again, it’s mimicking the power and the speed of down in this motion as this side is coming up.

“So a great drill to mimic the speed of swinging a golf club full out when you don’t have a range. Maybe you’re stuck at home… I’ve done this in hotel rooms to throw it into a pillow, or actually better off throwing it into the duvet, it won’t make any noise.

“Two-handed, accelerate down here and you could do a little jump if you really want the speed, like so. And again, good stretch. Even though I’m throwing down there, I’m getting a good stretch up here. Great way to warm up if you’ve nowhere to hit shots.”

How did Padraig Harrington perform in the 2025 season?

Six-time PGA Tour winner Harrington has been sharing superb tips and tricks for some time, but it hasn’t distracted his efforts on the course.

On the PGA Tour Champions in 2025, he secured two wins from his 16 starts, along with one runner-up finish.

Should Tiger Woods join the PGA Tour Champions?

Also this season, Harrington hit the opening tee shot at The Open Championship, but went on to miss the cut at Royal Portrush.

Harrington could see Tiger Woods join the PGA Tour Champions in 2026, which would be a huge boost for all involved, including the legendary American himself.
