Gary Player loves giving out golf advice and for one young fan back in 2022, they were given a more than personal touch from the South African.

With decades of experience in the game of golf and nine major wins to his name, Player is more than equipped to dish out the advice.

Over the years, we’ve seen countless tips and hints from Player as he tries to pass on his knowledge and experience to others.

How many holes do you think is the perfect number for a round of golf?

“The game is more popular than ever among avid golfers with the income and leisure to play a lot, but most people have less free time than ever. The current generation of younger parents spends a lot more time supervising their kids than previous generations, and it means they find it harder to justify a weekend round of golf. Leaving for the course at 7 in the morning and coming back at 3 in the afternoon is a hard sell for a family man. But getting back in time for lunch wouldn’t be.

“That’s why we should consider the possibility of making 12 holes a standard round. It might mean breaking up 18-hole facilities into three segments of six holes. Of course it would meet resistance, but eventually it would be accepted because it would make sense in people’s lives.

“We need more young people to play this phenomenal game, because it’s a game you can play your entire life. So we’ve got to keep experimenting and see what we can do to make the game more appealing.

“I designed a golf course in Missouri, USA, that has 12 holes. It’s perfect for people who don’t have a whole day, because, let’s admit it, that is how long 18 holes can take to play golf. They can play 6 holes, or 9 holes or 12 holes if they please and it’s been a roaring success. You have the choice!

However, rarely do we see a golfer like Player go out of his way during an actual tournament to give advice out.

But back at the PNC Championship in 2022, that’s exactly what Player did.

Gary Player’s tips for one lucky young golf fan

Player was still teeing up in his late 80s and ahead of competing in the PNC back in 2022, he made his way from the range towards the tee box.

However, on his way, a young golf fan caught the eye of the South African. What followed was an intriguing exchange as the youngster revealed he could already break 90.

From there, Player was hooked and took it upon himself to offer up some more advice.

There are so many good players that stand over the ball, they’re thinking so much. They get paralysis by analysis,” Player said.

“Once your arm is here position, turn your core, back and through,” Player said (Golf Digest) “Hard as you can. Nothing else.”

Next, Player offered a small nugget of information around putting to the youngster.

“Pick out one dimple on the golf ball,” he continued. “Watch the blade hit that dimple, and only then, look up. You’ll remember that?”

Gary Player is the perfect golf tipster

Now at 90, Gary Player has been there and done it all in golf but he is very much full of life and his love for the game shines through whenever he speaks.

For any young golfer, absorbing what Player says is as good as anything.

Yes, he might well give the odd piece of advice out that for you personally, doesn’t quite work.

But in the main, Player has bags and bags of knowledge to pass down and as this youngster demonstrated here, he’s never too busy to hand that knowledge on.
