Tiger Woods is widely known as one of the greatest putters golf has ever seen and if he’s dishing out the tips at any point, it’s a good idea to listen and pay attention.

Woods won countless events and majors by making huge putts when it mattered and he’s often spoken of as being one of golf’s great scramblers.

Of course, like any golfer, Woods had better years than others when it came to the flatstick but in the main, he’s been a consistent performer.

And when discussing how he tries to read putts and what amateurs do wrong when in his prime, Woods has explained just how he tries to get set up to give his putts the best chance of dropping.

Tiger Woods’ putting tip as he explains what amateurs get wrong

There are countless little tips and tricks videos out there from over the years from some of the best golfers to ever play the game.

However, in what is a simple case of getting the right alignment and view of the golf ball, Tiger Woods explained previously just how anyone can improve by making sure their set up is right.

“When I draw lines, I want to have my eyes either directly over the ball or slightly inside it. I would like to see my eyes slightly behind the golf ball, so I am always looking down the target line. My tendency has always been to sit too far back on my heels and be too far away from the ball so I can’t really see the line,” Woods explained.

“So I want to be on top of the ball. A lot of amateurs, when they get past the golf ball, their stroke kind of goes into a scooping type of motion. So when your eyes are sitting back here, it’s easier for the club to roll over, kind of like a full swing. So have eyes over the ball, so you can see the line.”

Tiger Woods’ best ever putting year on the PGA Tour

Tiger Woods has had some superb years when it comes to putting over the years. In the 2000s, he was very much the dominant putter on tour.

Indeed, it is in 2004 where Woods probably had his best year, as he ranked number one for strokes gained putting.

However, it is outside of that strokes gained stat that he also shone across the board.

Woods was 2nd for total putting, 7th for 3 putt avoidance and 6th for average distance of putts made.

On top of that, he was top 20 in putts per round, and top 25 in one putt percentage.

Put simply, when you combine all those stats, then it makes for a tremendous return and that’s just what Woods did in 2004.
