If there’s one word amateur golfers dread hearing, it’s the ‘shank’, but don’t worry, Sir Nick Faldo is here to help out.

The dreaded shank has plagued golfers all over the world since the game was invented.

And now Sir Nick Faldo has given his best advice on how to avoid hitting the most destructive shot a golfer can hit.

Faldo won six majors throughout his incredible career, so he certainly knows what he’s talking about when it comes to the technique required when swinging the golf club.

The 67-year-old is well-known for his no-nonsense, controversial takes. Only last month, Faldo even suggested that LIV golfers have gone soft!

This time though, the three-time Masters champion was in a more light-hearted, helpful mood.

There is not a shot more annoying in golf than a shank.

It seems to come out of nowhere most of the time, and usually ends up in at least a double bogey due to its destructiveness.

So here’s how you stop hitting the dreaded shank.

Faldo said, It’s a psychological issue. Get rid of that picture to start off with. Obviously if you’re shanking the golf ball, it comes from you moving forward and getting jammed inside. This ‘junk’ here is heading towards the golf ball. We want to do the absolute opposite to that. I would recommend for a while, to stop you going forward, is to get your weight off your left side, because I think you’re leaning into it too much. Have a couple of practice strokes just with your right hand, and see how steep it is going back, point your thumbs to the sky and let your right hand go.

It sounds easy in theory but the problem with shanks is that more often than not, they come completely out of the blue.

PGA Tour players aren’t immune from hitting them either!

Some of the worst shanks from PGA Tour players

This was Justin Rose back in 2018:

And he was at it again at The Valero Texas open just last month!

Scottie Scheffler was at it at the Tour Championship last year as well:

Meanwhile, Patton Kizzire produced an absolute beauty at The Players Championship in 2022:

Even the GOAT himself isn’t immune from the shank. Tiger Woods had a shocker at Riviera back in 2024:

Maybe all of those golfers above should have heeded the advice laid out by Sir Nick Faldo!
