Shane Lowry tells amateurs the only two clubs he uses when chipping and what they should do around the greens

Shane Lowry knows a thing or two about chipping and short-game in golf and he’s given out the ideal tip for amateurs to look out for in terms of club selection.

Lowry is renowned around the world for his short-game skills and after growing up on the tricky links courses of Ireland, he’s more than used to playing the odd tricky shot.

For the Irishman, honing his short-game has served him well over a successful career that has yielded major wins and Ryder Cup success.

Now, in a stroke of luck for the amateur golfers out there, Lowry has explained his thought process around the greens and crucially, why he only uses two clubs.

Some golfers are worth listening to more than others on certain subjects and when it comes to short-game, Shane Lowry is right up there with the likes of Phil Mickelson.

Thankfully, Lowry has teamed up with Golf Digest to demonstrate his chipping technique and explained just what is going through his mind as he eyes up the shorter shots.

“I only chip with two clubs. I use my lob wedge the majority of the time or I’ll chip and run and for a chip and run I’ll use a pitching wedge. I don’t do anything else. The big thing for me is I find when I’m chipping, if I have too many options – like I used to carry four wedges – so a 56 and 60 too,” Lowry explained.

“But too many options then I’d get in between shots and not hit any and end up becoming sloppy. So I practice with my pitching and my lob wedge and I find that gives me a bit of, a bit of being more clear what I want to do in my head.”

“So I get it running. I would encourage amateurs to do this a little bit more and look, yeah I can play this shot with a lob wedge but sometimes I get here and feel comfortable hitting it and just go and do it. I try and play with what I see. If I’m under pressure, if I see the shot then I take the shot and if it doesn’t come off it doesn’t come off.”

Shane Lowry’s short-game stats for 2025

While Lowry is well known for his creativity and class around the greens, the stats in 2025 don’t actually back up him being one of the best.

In fact, apart from being above average in the scrambling stats, Lowry hasn’t been at his best unfortunately in the last 12 months on the PGA Tour.

As we can see, there is much room for improvement from Lowry.

However, what does seem to separate him that the stats don’t show is his ability to do it in big moments.

And ultimately, that’s why he is a major champion and has enjoyed the success he has.
