If you want to improve your driving, there is literally nobody better to take advice from than Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy is a sensational driver of the golf ball. He is remarkably long off the tee and is fairly straight as well, given the club-head speed he generates.
The Northern Irishman is currently sitting in first place in strokes gained off the tee on the PGA Tour, and that is no surprise at all.
McIlroy uses what he calls a ‘slingshot’ method to create more club-head speed.

And now he has shared another tip with amateur golfers regarding how to create more speed through the ball.
Rory McIlroy on the mistake he sees amateur golfers making all the time
McIlroy has a really unique move in his swing that creates so much power.
When he was a teenager, Titleist manufacturers were stunned by how McIlroy’s hips worked through impact.
And now he has shared some advice on how to use your upper body in order to create more distance and speed.
McIlroy highlighted how he sees amateurs ‘squatting’ on the downswing far too much.
He said, “I would not recommend thinking about squatting in the middle of your golf swing. Again, transition wise, you’re sort of loading onto your left side and transition anyway.

“And then, it’s just more of a to me, if I were Steve, and he’s trying to, you know, get some distance, I would just think, you know, the thing that I see a lot is people don’t get enough rotation through impact, and they don’t turn their hips enough.
“And, you know, I would I would say to him, like, you know, try to feel as if your belt buckle’s looking at the targeted impact more than anything else, ’cause that’ll produce maybe a little more speed for him.“
That is actually great advice. Let the big muscles create the speed for you rather than trying to gain distance by swinging faster with your hands.
McIlroy’s exceptional length laid bare by PGA Tour stats
It’s remarkable how McIlroy generates so much power.
He stands at just 5ft 9in tall, so he doesn’t exactly have natural leverage with his arms.
Here are his driving numbers from the past 10 years on the PGA Tour:
| PGA Tour season | Average distance in yards | Rank |
| 2025 | 317.5 | 3rd |
| 2024 | 320.2 | 2nd |
| 2023 | 326.3 | 1st |
| 2022 | 321.3 | 2nd |
| 2021 | 319.2 | 2nd |
| 2020 | 314.0 | 4th |
| 2019 | 313.5 | 2nd |
| 2018 | 319.7 | 1st |
| 2017 | 317.2 | 1st |
| 2016 | 306.8 | 9th |
McIlroy has an incredibly strong core that enables him to fire through the golf ball from the top of the swing.
Whilst amateurs won’t suddenly start driving the ball like McIlroy, they might just add a few miles per hour to their ball speeds by learning from the advice given by The Masters champion above.
