Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington knows his way around a golf course and in recent years, he’s become a key source of information for amateurs with his top tips.

Harrington has developed a great knack for helping the average golfer through a series of clips on his social media channels.

The Irishman is a fountain of knowledge, and seems to have a fix or practice routine for everyone.

Of course, one of the biggest elements of golf any amateur can get wrong is the basic golf swing.

With so much information out there in 2025, it’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole and end up with too much going on upstairs and ultimately, confusing you.

Thankfully for us, then, Padraig Harrington shared a brilliant tip back in 2024 which he explains saw Gary Player right for years.

Padraig Harrington shares the golf swing tip that helped Gary Player

As we all know, Harrington has helped himself to three majors and another two on the senior tour.

However, Gary Player won nine majors and that means that between them, they have a whopping 12 major victories.

So, when Harrington is giving out the tips on how to swing the club and saying they helped Player to enjoy the success he did, it’s worth taking notes.

“In the first lesson we talked about the three letters and grip, the S, C, H. The S was for the swish with the club, the C was for getting the chest down, and the H stands for one universal thing that I would say to every golfer who plays the game or is going to play the game, that will make every swing they make for the rest of their life that little bit more consistent and yet nobody will want to do it. The H stands for ‘hold your finish’,” Harrington explains.

“That goes for a putt, a chip, iron shot, wedge, drive. If you can hold your finish, you’ll get a little bit more consistent every time.

“So what do I mean by hold your finish? If you’re Rory McIlroy, you can finish all the way around there, if you’re a young person, you can finish like Rory. That’s great.

“If you’re like me, I work on it but my finish is right there. One of two seconds though, as long as you’re up on your side that’s fine. The one thing we’re trying to avoid with the finish is this method, where they’re falling backwards. So this is what you do…let the pressure off by stepping forward. Gary Player did that for years, it’s a great move and probably adds a little bit of distance for you as well.”

What Gary Player told amateurs to do around the greens

While Harrington is explaining the nuances of swinging the club here and mentioning Gary Player, it is Player himself who has recently offered some short-game advice.

Taking to social media recently, Player spoke on how a bad putt is better than a good chip as he tried to help amateurs around the greens.

Mixing both of these tips together will help any golfer and with so much help out there in the modern game, listening to two players who have 12 majors between them is a good idea.
