Every person who has ever played the game of golf knows that feeling of hitting a shot that you could almost imagine a decent professional being at least content with.

Unfortunately, not only are amateur golfers not hitting those great shots anywhere near often enough, but it is also the size of the penalties they pay for their mistakes which really hurt them when scoring.

Every golfer has been there. Faced with the smallest gap in the trees, plenty of amateurs will refuse to take their medicine and instead attempt the hero shot that Seve Ballesteros or Phil Mickelson made look so simple. Unfortunately, the ball is usually drawn like a magnet to the first tree, regardless of where it stands in relation to the gap you could definitely find.

The problem is that practicing some of the harder shots in golf is not easy when most driving ranges offer mats with barely a hint of being uneven.

Lee Trevino suggests the hardest shot in golf nobody ever thinks about

Of course, if you ask any golfer what the hardest shot in golf is, many will probably suggest a bunker shot from around 40 yards. But it seems that there is another type of shot that really gets neglected in practice.

Speaking to Golf.com, Lee Trevino shared how important it is to work on all kinds of shots on the range, including the type of punch shot required when dealing with thick rough and overhanging trees.

“The hardest shot in golf is when you get in the trees on the right, and you can’t go down towards the flag, you’ve got to go across to the fairway to lay-up. The hardest shot in golf, used to take a wedge or whatever club you are going to get out from under the trees with to the fairway. And nobody would even think of this. And the hardest shot in golf is how hard do you hit that golf ball to clear the rough here but then stop it before it gets into that rough. That’s the hardest shot in golf, besides the 60 yard bunker shot,” he said.

“You got to get out of that trouble and you’re laying up, so you need the ball in the fairway, and people will hit it too low, never make it out of the rough. Or they hit it too hard, go in the rough on the other side. So this is something that you have to practice.”

The shot Jack Nicklaus suggested was one of the hardest

Certainly, Trevino’s words will strike a chord with anyone who has hit a wayward drive and immediately wondered how exactly they are meant to hit the ball at the only trajectory which will get it back out of trouble.

Elsewhere, it was another shot which Jack Nicklaus suggested was one of the toughest. For the 18-time major champion, it was the 60-yard pitch shot.

And, as reported by Golf.com, Nicklaus explained how he would look to play that shot.

“I want to be sure I’m aggressive as I can possibly be with this shot to be able to get as much control on the golf ball, either through spin or through hitting a soft shot onto the green,” he said. “I use a narrow stance to keep my feet nice and loose and being able to be very fluid so I can be very quick with my feet to be aggressive.

“Next, I play the ball off my left heel,” he added. “My head is pretty much over the top of the ball, I grip the club shorter, I make sure I play the shot with a lot of hands and I’m trying to be very aggressive.”
