John Daly was the longest hitter in world golf for nearly two decades.

So when Daly offers up a golf tip on how to hit the ball longer off the tee, amateur golfers should be listening intently.

Daly insists he would have hit the ball further than Bryson DeChambeau off the tee, if he was using modern equipment during his prime.

In fact, Daly even claimed his ball speed was faster than DeChambeau’s when he was at his best – 220 mph to be exact.

While that claim from the 59-year-old is disputable, what cannot be questioned is that he was the most powerful driver of the golf ball in his heyday, by quite some distance as well.

If you’re an amateur golfer who isn’t as long as you’d like to be off the tee, listen to some sage advice from Daly regarding a really simple way to help you start launching your drives.

John Daly’s tip to help amateur golfers launch their drives

During his prime years, Daly was the most naturally gifted golfer to have ever graced the professional game.

The ‘Wild Thing’ was a hugely popular player as well due to his carefree approach to the game and his prodigious power.

He once provided a great tip to help amateurs launch the ball off the tee just like he did.

Daly explained: I don’t think it matters if you have a real quick swing or a real slow swing, but for me it has to be slow on the backswing to set up.

You know, as a pitcher, he gets up and he winds, he’s not putting his foot up real fast, he’s getting that hip up and he’s loading. To me, it’s the same thing in golf.

Like in baseball, you’re loading on your right. You’ve got to load, and I think a lot of amateurs don’t load.

To hit a good golf ball, everything is right here, but you’ve got to be able to load. To me, it’s loading the right side and finish on your left.

Average distance amateurs with varying handicaps hit every club

While you may never be able to hit the ball as long as Daly did in his prime, by taking his advice on board you may well be able to add some distance to your tee shots.

But how far do amateurs actually hit the ball on average?

Here are the average distances amateur golfers hit every single club, according to data provided by Shot Scope.

The game of golf has evolved into a power game over the past decade or so.

And if you follow Daly’s advice, you will most likely start to realize that you have some untapped potential hidden away when it comes to length off the tee.
