Jack Nicklaus was unquestionably one of the greatest putters in the history of the game.

So when Nicklaus gives advice on what to do, and more importantly what not to do when putting, it’s always wise to listen to him.

The Golden Bear, as he is affectionately known, is hosting the Memorial Tournament this week.

Nicklaus spoke to the press about Muirfield Village on Tuesday, and explained the changes that he thought were needed due to improved technology.

In his heyday, Nicklaus was pretty much unbeatable.

He seemed to will his ball into the hole at times and had a surreal knack of making putts when he needed to most.

But what does the greatest of all time think about some of the modern techniques used for putting?

Nicklaus might not have had the most textbook of putting styles, but there were no better exponents of using the flat-stick than the Golden Bear himself.

The 18-time major champion made an appearance on the Good Good YouTube channel alongside host Matt Scharff.

When Scharff was lining up his putt with a marker pen inked down the middle of his ball, Nicklaus was taken aback.

He said, What are you doing there?

Scharff responded, I am lining it up. Do you hate that?

To which Nicklaus replied, Yeah, I think that looks ridiculous. I see guys doing that and I’m sitting there thinking how in the world can they sit there and do all this [line it up]. What is that nonsense? Just hit the ball and knock it in the hole.

Jack Nicklaus’s putting style should be copied more

The crazy thing is that nobody ever seems to copy Nicklaus’s putting style.

He was the best there has ever been with a putter in his hands, especially under pressure.

It must be the fact that Nicklaus’s putting style wasn’t necessarily orthodox. He stood over the ball with a fairly open stance and he was pretty hunched over in comparison to players in the modern day.

The Golden Bear also kept his glove on when putting – something that is very rarely seen in the modern game.

Any young children who have dreams of making it at the very highest level of the game would do well to have a close look at how Nicklaus went about his business on the greens.
