How many questions did you get right in this golf quiz?
The nine-time major winner has an encyclopedic knowledge of the game, but his philosophy revolves around stripping the golf swing back to its rawest form.
Amateur golfers have a tendency to really over-complicate things. So to combat that, just follow Player’s advice regarding the best way to improve your ball striking.
Gary Player’s advice for struggling amateurs which will make a ‘huge difference’
Player has a wonderful knack of being able to make improving your golf game sound more simple than it probably is.
When speaking to Golf Monthly back in 2018, Player responded when asked what advice he has for amateur golfers who are struggling with their games.
The nine-time major champion said: “I could say learn to hit the ball by rotating the hips if I was being technical.

“Don’t hit the ball with your hands. Never fall back, and rotate the hips onto the left side through the swing. It’s difficult to do, but will make a huge difference to the majority of amateurs.“
Player’s advice here centers around the rotation of the body and eliminating the hands from the golf swing.
The big muscles should always guide the small ones. Whenever the hands get overactive in the golf swing, you rely more and more on timing in order to hit good golf shots.
So why not simplify things by taking the variables out of play. Turn the hips and shoulders and rotate your chest and torso through impact.
Then your hands will simply follow.
Gary Player’s tips to help amateur golfers cure their slice
One of the most common problems that amateur golfers face is the dreaded slice.
However, Mr Player is on hand to help us all out!
When asked to share his best advice for amateurs looking to eliminate the slice from their games, he responded with some really simple tips.
Player explained: “Move your (lead) hand over, how many knuckles can you see? Three, that’s what you’ve got to see. If you see no knuckles, you’re going to slice (it).
“Then don’t put your right hand (trail hand) over, put it the same way (angle) as your left.
“The one thing you can’t do, it’s hard to play golf with a bad grip.
“Two things, get the grip right and then what they call, ‘hit and hold’. Look pretty for the camera, have balance and finish properly. They are the only things you’ve got to do.“
Follow those simple tips from Gary Player to improve your chances of hitting a straight ball or who knows, perhaps even a draw!
