The most common weakness of average to high-handicap amateur golfers is the dreaded slice.
Most amateurs dream of being able to draw the golf ball, and now they might just be able to hit their shots with a right to left shape (for right-handers) with the help of Charles Howell III.
Hitting a draw, and executing it well, is something that Howell III has done throughout his entire career. Affectionately known out on tour as ‘Chucky Three Sticks’, the 46-year-old has three PGA Tour wins and one LIV Golf victory to his name.
Howell III regularly practiced alongside Tiger Woods when he first came out on tour around 25 years ago. So he got to witness first hand the art of exceptional shot-shaping.
The man from Augusta, Georgia, joined LIV Golf in 2022, and is part of Bryson DeChambeau‘s ‘Crushers’ team. Howell III recently admitted that he looks up to the ‘awesome’ DeChambeau, but the three-time PGA Tour winner has plenty of admirers as well.

Anyone who has watched the 46-year-old LIV golfer on the range or out on the course will know just how much of an elite ball-striker he is.
Charles Howell III tells amateur golfers the best way to instantly hit a draw
Hitting a draw on demand is a seemingly never-ending pursuit for most club golfers. However, help is at hand.
Howell III was on the range ahead of LIV Dallas with YouTube content creator Rick Shiels.
And he shared the best drill he has ever seen in order to help amateur golfers to start drawing the golf ball on demand.
He said: “The best drill I have ever seen and done for this is I will get to my setup, I’ll widen my stance and I’ll actually pre-bank my (trail) foot in. My normal setup was here, I’m going to bank this in (trail leg). I feel a lot of weight forward, I’m going to hit a ball from there, and I draw every ball, and so would you, because your weight is forward, and your foot is banked in. This will teach your brain what that feels like and how it translates into the through swing.“
That really is an incredibly simple drill, and one that should make the world of difference for amateur golfers the world over.
World’s best golfers rarely draw the ball any more
If you watch a golf tournament on television these days, it’s very rare to see the top players move the ball from right to left, especially with the driver.
The fade is the go-to shot with the driver for almost every single leading tour pro.
Rory McIlroy and Brsyon DeChambeau are probably the only two exceptions to that rule. Xander Schauffele moves it both ways, whilst the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland almost exclusively play with a cut.
There are two reasons for that in my opinion. Firstly, the modern equipment makes it extremely hard to draw the golf ball, due to the explosive faces on the drivers these days.
And secondly, a draw turning into a hook is a lot more destructive than a fade turning into a slice. My best advice for amateur golfers is to work at refining your natural shape.
Not being able to hit a draw isn’t actually the worst thing in the world. However, if you’re intent on learning how to do so, the advice from Howell III above is priceless.
