Ben Griffin is very much becoming a household name in the game of golf after he won for the third time in 2025 this weekend just gone.
Griffin has emerged from nowhere in the last 12 months to become one of the main attractions on the PGA Tour.
Griffin made it north of $11m won for the season by winning the World Wide Technology Championship.
It means Griffin has now equalled Rory McIlroy’s record of three wins on the PGA Tour this season, with only world number one Scottie Scheffler winning more this year.
Of course, to win like Griffin has requires an abundance of talent and crucially, a high skill level in all aspects of golf. And that includes chipping, in which Griffin has previously shown us how he gets it done.
Ben Griffin’s tip for golfers to get the ball higher on chip shots
It seems pretty amazing that not so long ago we’d be questioning just who Ben Griffin is, never mind taking advice from him on certain shots.
Nevertheless, his rise has been seriously impressive and given his ability and status on TOUR now, it’s worth noting the advice he gives out.
With that in mind, Griffin has explained in a previous tips video just how he gets the ball higher when it comes to chipping around the greens.
“The reason I like to keep the face as open as possible is to prevent myself from trying to lift the ball up in the air. If I open it up all the way past 90 degrees, it is going to force my body to rotate and try to almost compress the ball,” Griffin explained.
“If it’s open like this and turning through and rotating and compressing, it is going to square up and I’m also going to have better contact and still hit it higher. That is a tip for all the folks at home.
“The ball position is more in the middle, to slightly back, and open up the face wide. It will pop it straight in the air. You have to really focus in on your contact. When you hit the higher grooves you are getting more spin. So the closer you can get to getting higher on the face, the more spin you are going to get.”
Can Ben Griffin upset the Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler grip on the PGA Tour?
Make no mistake, 2025 was a year dominated by McIlroy and Scheffler, despite Griffin winning three times.
McIlroy’s form was nothing short of superb right the way from January onwards, while once Scheffler returned to full fitness, he looked even better than he had done in 2024.
Nevertheless, Ben Griffin has the confidence and game to challenge them both if, and it’s a big if, he can find the consistency that those two have in terms of getting wins.
That means competing most weeks and not missing cuts and ensuring that come the third round on a weekend, he is somewhere in contention at the very least. In fairness to Griffin, he did finish runner-up twice this year and also landed 12 top tens, so he isn’t far off at all.
The next step, is to simply convert those good weeks into wins, as Scheffler does so often.
McIlroy and Scheffler are masters at ensuring they’re rarely out of contention and for Griffin to match them, he needs to find the same.
