Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead are two of the greatest golfers of all time.

So Xander Schauffele must be doing something right to be keeping company with them.

Nicklaus and Snead held a US Open record together before this year’s instalment of the competition at Oakmont, but now the 31-year-old Californian has matched them both.

Schauffele said how difficult Oakmont was before the US Open began, and so that proved to be correct throughout the tournament.

The two-time major champion has struggled off the tee this season – he is ranked at 115th in strokes gained off the tee.

Schauffele experienced the same problems with his driver at the US Open this year.

However, he remained competitive right up until the very end, with rounds of 72, 74, 71 and 69. Now he is in very elite company.

The world number three is renowned for his ability to play tough golf courses extremely well.

Schauffele has now equalled records set by Nicklaus and Snead.

The nine-time PGA Tour winner certainly didn’t have his best stuff at Oakmont, with his driver and his putter causing him problems on numerous occasions.

However, he ended up in a tie for 12th – his ninth consecutive top-15 finish at a US Open.

That is something that only Nicklaus and Snead have achieved in the history of the sport.

And it highlights just how consistent Schauffele is. There is surely no doubt that he will win the US Open at some point during his career.

What makes Schauffele’s US Open record even better

Interestingly, Schauffele has done something in America’s national championship that neither Nicklaus nor Snead could manage.

Amazingly, his nine consecutive top-15 finishes have all come in his first nine appearances at the US Open.

That really is an incredible achievement from the current British Open champion.

There are signs that Schauffele is returning to somewhere near his best form; he was just not consistent enough at Oakmont to stand a chance of winning the US Open.

His time will come though, make no mistake about that.
