With Scottie Scheffler now a four-time major winner, we are accustomed to seeing one of the most composed characters in golf get over the line with ease.

Scheffler’s dominance in recent years has been more than impressive and as we hurtle towards 2026, more majors will surely come his way in the coming years.

Nevertheless, everyone needs a starting point in their major winning career and for Scheffler, that came at the 2022 Masters.

In the end, Scheffler got over the line relatively easily as he held off Rory McIlroy to claim a first major and green jacket.

However, things might have been different had Scheffler let his pre-round emotions get the better of him on Masters Sunday.

Why Scottie Scheffler was in tears before the final round of the 2022 Masters

Scottie Scheffler is a cool customer in the main but we have seen some emotion from him in recent times, especially with his wife and new-born son.

That emotion seems to have always been there, though, and according to Scheffler himself, he was actually a bit of an emotional wreck before the final round in 2022.

So much so, that he needed Meredith to give him a little pep talk before he teed off.

“We went and got some food. I spilled my dinner in the car on the way home, and that was extraordinarily frustrating,” Scheffler admitted.

“You can see Meredith is still laughing at me. She thought it was the funniest thing ever; I didn’t think it was so funny at the time.”

Going on to discuss the actual day of his final round, Scheffler then conceded that he had indeed been a touch emotional ahead of tee off.

“I cried like a baby this morning. I was so stressed out. I didn’t know what to do,” Scheffler continued.

“I was sitting there telling Meredith: ‘I don’t think I’m ready for this. I’m not ready, I don’t feel like I’m ready for this kind of stuff,’ and I just felt overwhelmed. She told me: ‘Who are you to say that you are not ready?’ Gosh, it was a long morning.”

Scottie Scheffler has more than proven himself as worthy

It seems odd to read that Scheffler was questioning not only his ability but also his standing in the game of golf here.

Yes, it was his first major tournament but given the year he’d had prior to winning, Scheffler was always going to be one of the favourites in ’22.

Since then, it goes without saying that Scheffler has proven himself to the masses and anyone else who cares to show an interest.

Three more majors – including a second green jacket – countless wins on the PGA Tour and record-setting rounds and achievements along the way show that Scheffler is very much THE star of modern golf.

Put simply, Scottie Scheffler is the man in golf right now and in 2026, he will once again be the player to beat.
