The Scottish Open is in the books and while Chris Gotterup might not be the most glamorous of winners, there is plenty to be excited about when it comes to Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler at The Open.

Royal Portrush is the next destination for the PGA Tour’s best and given it’s in his homeland, McIlroy will be desperate to win.

McIlroy could and should have won the Scottish Open but missed a few costly putts while Gotterup made his to make the difference.

However, while the defeat in Scotland will sting for McIlroy, it was a welcome return to form and with Scottie Scheffler also not too far off the pace, things are looking up for Portrush.

In fact, after a 2025 which has had so many ups and downs already, the PGA Tour could be about to get the perfect send off to major season.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy could finally go head to head

If you are a lover of golf and the game at its purest, then seeing both the world number one and number two go head to head is exactly what you want to see.

With The Open set to close off major season for another year, this is the last chance for us to see McIlroy vs Scheffler on the biggest stage.

Thankfully for us, though, it seems both players are bringing something close to their A-game to Royal Portrush.

For McIlroy, it will be a case of much of the same and if he produces as he did in Scotland, he won’t be far away.

For Scheffler, it’s going to be about making putts. The world number one didn’t sink anything in round four but still finished nine under par and collected another top ten for the season.

With both players feeling like they left something out there at the Renaissance Club, it goes without saying that they’ll both want to deliver at The Open.

And for us golf lovers, that is everything we want to see and more to finish off major season.

Why the PGA Tour desperately needs McIlroy vs Scheffler at The Open

While the PGA Tour will argue they have the best players in the world and the greater depth to their fields, there is no doubt who the box office star of 2025 has been again.

That man, without a doubt, is Bryson DeChambeau.

Sadly for the PGA Tour, he is LIV Golf’s poster boy and while Rory McIlroy got the better of DeChambeau at The Masters, he is still the star attraction whenever he plays.

Now, with just The Open to go in terms of majors, the PGA Tour will be desperate to see its two top players producing the goods and going head to head on the Sunday.

If we do get Scheffler vs McIlroy, then the TOUR could see viewership not seen for a while and with that, it will bring major season to a close in the best way possible.
