Where the top five from the last US Open to be held at Oakmont are now including the only player to ever shoot 58 on the PGA Tour

We are just a few weeks away from the US Open at Oakmont Country Club and looking back at the last time the event was held there in 2016, the leaderboard could look mightily different this time around.

A number of top players are looking to win the US Open and add one of golf’s biggest events to their resumes.

Going into the 2025 event, players like Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler will all be considered among the favourites.

However, while those players will no doubt be in the mix, when you look back at the 2016 final leaderboard and the top five in particular, there’s only one name in there who might realistically have a chance at winning in 2025.

How the US Open top five looked the last time the event was held at Oakmont

It’s always fun to look back at leader boards from past events and often, it can be a good indicator of just how much the game has changed in such a short period.

Indeed, since the nine years from when Oakmont last hosted the US Open, the golf landscape has changed significantly thanks to the introduction of LIV Golf.

In fact, it is a LIV Golfer who actually won the event, as Dustin Johnson triumphed with a very modest four under par final score.

Interestingly though, the four who follow him all share different stories in golf right now.

Second placed Jim Furyk remains the only player to ever shoot a 58 on the PGA Tour and to this day, that hasn’t been matched.

Behind Furyk was the only man from that top five likely to challenge this year in Shane Lowry, while the relatively unknown Scott Piercy managed a fourth place finish.

Interestingly, back in 5th was Masters winner and another current LIV star, Sergio Garcia. However, in 2025, Garcia has missed the chance at qualifying for Oakmont again, meaning as it stands, he has no chance of getting in the mix again.

The last two US Opens at Oakmont show how tough things can be

The US Open is known for being one of the hardest events to win and the long and deep rough, along with usually rapid greens, mean players have to play well to succeed.

Indeed, while the 2016 edition at Oakmont saw Dustin Johnson come in under par to win, the story in the one before that in 2007 was quite different.

That year, tough conditions saw Angel Cabrera come out on top by shooting a final score of plus five.

It’s one of the highest scores to even win a major and coincidentally, the aforementioned Jim Furyk also finished second that year as well.

Despite the big changes at Oakmont this year, it’s set to be another tough test.
