The careers of Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth have headed in completely different directions over the past three years.

Whilst Scheffler has won two majors since 2022 and cemented his position at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, Spieth has regressed badly.

The two players both live in Dallas, Texas and are said to be close friends off the golf course.

In fact, Scheffler confirmed how good his relationship is with Spieth just before the CJ Cup Byron Nelson began last week.

And Spieth recently said that Scheffler beats him during practice all the time now.

It’s hardly a surprise really, given the quality of the two-time Masters winner’s all-round game.

But will Spieth be able to rediscover his best stuff and compete with his friend Scheffler once again?

What Scottie Scheffler said about Jordan Spieth’s golf swing in 2023

Scheffler has dominated world golf since 2022, just like Spieth did during a three-season spell from 2015 to 2017.

In fact, the Masters, US Open and Open Champion was someone who Scheffler really looked up to.

The reigning FedEx Cup champion was full of praise for Spieth two years ago.

The 28-year-old said, “He [Spieth] was always a few years ahead of me and crushing it from a young age. “He’s always been a guy that’s given me great advice, and he’s such a talented player.

I feel like Jordan and I are pretty similar in the way we like to play shots. We’re not really — I would say that neither of us really have perfect golf swings, to say the least.

Here’s the thing though, whilst Scheffler’s swing might not be pretty to watch, from the takeaway back to impact it’s actually mechanically perfect.

It is just what happens after the ball that makes the Texan’s swing look so ungainly.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Spieth.

Spieth’s swing is nothing like Scheffler’s

The 31-year-old’s club-face has been far too shut during his takeaway recently. His lateral movement is more excessive than you would see from the best players in the world, especially Scheffler.

And Spieth has developed a habit of coming over the top, which is never a good thing with a shut club-face because it will more often than not lead to big nasty hooks off the tee.

In contrast, Scheffler’s setup is absolutely perfect, whilst his grip is textbook. His club-face is perfectly neutral halfway up, at the top of the backswing, and at impact.

It’s little wonder why he’s ranked 1st in strokes gained approach to green this season on the PGA Tour, and Spieth is currently sitting down in 48th position.

Spieth may never have the perfect swing to look at, just like Scheffler won’t.

However, the three-time major champion should try to learn as much as he can from his fellow Texan about getting his club-face in more of a neutral position throughout the journey of his swing.

It will lead to far greater consistency for him.
