Jordan Spieth is definitely one of the marquee names in the field for the Valero Texas Open this week, particularly with the three-time major champion about to return to a course he has very fond memories of.

It has been the start to the PGA Tour season for Jordan Spieth we should have all expected. Impressive displays at the WM Phoenix Open and the Cognizant Classic were mixed in with a missed cut at the Genesis Invitational and disappointing finishes at Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass.

But he has enjoyed past victories at his next two events. Of course, the 2015 Masters was a real breakout moment for the Texan, with Spieth winning on 18 under par. He should have arguably won the following year, too.

Meanwhile, his victory at the Valero Texas Open came in 2021. Funnily enough, the score he won with at TPC San Antonio was 18 under par once again.

When Jordan Spieth made a heckler look silly at the Valero Texas Open

It was the penultimate victory of Spieth’s career to date, with the 31-year-old battling with a wrist injury for some time since.

But the win also included a brilliant moment during the second round, with Spieth heckled by a young fan as he prepared to hit his approach on the 10th hole. Spieth was right up against the cart path, when the fan bizarrely asked: ‘Jordan, are you going to try something stupid here?’

Spieth did not react, but still managed to get the ball just beyond pin high, to the side of the green – reminding everyone why he is one of the best at recovery shots on tour.

What Jordan Spieth said when asked about the fan’s comment

Spieth was asked about the incident following his round. And he admitted that he had little idea of what was said before he hit the superb shot.

“I don’t even know what he said. Yeah, it seemed like there was a good crowd out there. In our group it didn’t seem like there was any limited fans. We had a really good showing and seemed like people were really ready to get out of the house because they certainly took full advantage of it. It was rowdy,” he said.

“Playing with Ryan Palmer, there were a lot of guys rooting against him or against me that were either A&M guys or Texas guys. So I thought it would be nice to play with another person from the state of Texas to get the support, but I didn’t really realize it was going to be opposites out there.

“But it was fun. We knew it was coming. I just tried to take a really good attitude into today knowing that we were going to get some really windy conditions. I thought the start was key for me and I got off to a great start in that and put some really good swings on the ball after kind of being a little sloppy at the end of yesterday’s round.”

The second round would actually prove to be Spieth’s worst of the week, as it was the only time he failed to break 70. He went on to beat Charley Hoffman by two shots to claim his 12th tour win.
