What happened when Nelly Korda met Tiger Woods for the very first time

Nelly Korda has certainly made a name for herself on the LPGA Tour, having idolised PGA Tour star Tiger Woods.

Woods is a 15-time major champion, with the former world number one boasting 82 PGA Tour titles throughout his stunning career.

And Korda is now a 15-time LPGA Tour champion, with seven of her career wins coming in a remarkable 2024 season.

The American also doubled her majors tally this season, while Woods was limited to just five tour-level events due to a back injury.

He did, however, delight fans by once more agreeing to take part in the PNC Championship alongside his son Charlie Woods.

What happened when Nelly Korda first met Tiger Woods?

Charlie will likely have idolised his father growing up, both on and off the course, with Korda once admitting her admiration for Tiger as she looked back on their first-ever meeting.

The PGA Tour shared footage of the LPGA Tour star meeting Woods for the first time, with Korda saying: “Hi Tiger.”

“Yo!” he replied, with Korda asking: “I was wondering if we could get a picture?” Woods obliged: “Nelly yes! You got it, done deal.”

She added: “I don’t want to bother you but I really wanted a photo,” with Woods saying “awesome” and Korda saying: “Thank you so much” after the photo was captured.

Sharing her immediate delight at the interaction with Woods, Korda commented: “Ahh so cool. Dream come true.”

Golf fans and indeed professionals such as Korda undoubtedly want a fit and healthy Woods given just how much he has done for the sport.

The latter still draws huge crowds when able to take part in competitions, with lucky fans witnessing him take on all four majors in 2024.

A 60th place finish was secured at the Masters after his withdrawal from The Genesis Invitational, with Woods then missing the cut at the PGA Championship, US Open and The Open Championship.

But having looked back on her first meeting with Woods, Korda highlighted just what he meant to her and indeed how much he has done for golf over the years.

“Every single time I watch that video of me approaching Tiger I get like bright red as a tomato, it’s a little embarrassing,” added Korda.

“But he was my idol and I know that people look up to me and hopefully they can see the love I have for the game and I can give them a little something here and there and hopefully they can pass it along too.

“At the end of the day it’s all about growing the game and Tiger did so much for my generation, the generation before. And that’s all you want is to share the love and hopefully continue growing it.”
