Rory McIlroy is one of the greatest golfers of all time and along the course of his career, he’s hit some simply mesmerising golf shots.

McIlroy has shown his class on more than one occasion. Whether it be to get him out of a sticky situation or simply holding his nerve in the biggest moments, we’ve been treated to some fine shots from the five-time major winner.

Picking just five as his best shots of all-time is never going to be easy.

But that’s what we’ve done here at the Golfing Gazette, as we look at the five greatest golf shots Rory McIlroy has ever hit.

15th hole – 2025 Masters

This one is fresh in the memory and for all the right reasons. McIlroy’s Masters hopes had suddenly started to hang by a thread and looking like he was blocked out by trees, it seemed nigh on impossible for him to hit the green in two.

However, McIlroy produced a moment of pure brilliance, hooking his 6-iron under and around the hanging branches, before landing it on the green and rolling to around six-feet.

McIlroy missed the putt for eagle, but a crucial birdie gave him a one shot cushion again and mentally, it was a huge moment.

18th hole – 2023 Scottish Open

Links golf can sometimes offer up chances to play the most imaginative of golf shots and going down the 18th at the 2023 Scottish Open, McIlroy did not disappoint.

With just over 200 yards to the pin, McIlroy pulled his 2-iron out. What followed was one of the greatest ‘low bullet’ shots you’re ever likely to see.

McIlroy then duly rolled in his par putt for yet another big tournament win and clutch moment.

17th hole – 2023 Ryder Cup

While the opening two shots of this article demonstrate McIlroy’s power and strength, what he did at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome showed his class and touch.

After putting himself in trouble off the 17th tee down the left, McIlroy found himself with a near impossible looking chip shot. Indeed, had he got anywhere within ten feet, it would have been an achievement.

Not to be deterred, McIlroy stepped up, fizzed in a chip with his wedge and stopped the golf ball dead within 2 feet. Matt Fitzpatrick’s reaction at the side of the green said it all as McIlroy very much showed his class in the short-game area.

18th hole – 2023 WGC-Dell Match Play

Going back to a demonstration of McIlroy’s power off the tee, we needn’t look much further than his stunning drive on the 18th back in 2023.

McIlroy was battling hard to see off Denny McCarthy and produced a moment of sheer brilliance off the tee.

Not only did McIlroy’s drive land on the green. But it trundled up to around three feet from the pin, allowing McIlroy to simply waltz up and tap in for the most sensational eagle.

Hole 12 – 2018 Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy has quickly become the man for the big occasion and occasions don’t come much bigger than the Ryder Cup.

Back in 2018 and playing alongside Ian Poulter at Le Golf National, McIlroy and Poulter found themselves in trouble down near the water and the ball buried in deep rough.

Fear not, though, as McIlroy once again proved just how good he is as he hit what commentators called the ‘shot of the day’ to within 20 feet.

As a smiling Poulter looked on, it set the tone for a comfortable win over Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson.
