With almost every average golfer dreaming of hitting the ball like Tiger Woods, it is no surprise that there is a real fascination with the clubs he has used across his career.

It seemed to be an absolute masterstroke from Nike to sign Tiger Woods earlier on in his career, while it was surely a huge coup for TaylorMade to land Woods once Nike stopped producing golf clubs from 2016.

Any golf club seen in Woods’ hands is immediately going to be desirable for many. Even at this stage of his career, there is an elegance about the way the 15-time major champion plays the game. So much of the charisma he would radiate on the golf course came from the way he would hit shots.

Of course, one aspect of the professional game that all amateurs probably cannot quite get their head around is how often the best players in the world have to change their equipment.

Tiger Woods explains how many times he would change clubs during his PGA Tour career

While so many of us rely on the same set of clubs until beyond the stage where the grips on the irons and the grooves on the wedges are completely worn away, the best of the best obviously have access to all of the equipment they could possibly need.

So how often would Tiger Woods change clubs during the season?

Speaking on trottiegolf, the 49-year-old explained that he would make frequent changes.

“I heard that the numbers [on the clubs] were made bigger because under pressure you wanted bigger numbers on the bottom,” Trottie said.

“That is not true,” Woods replied.

“I heard that you changed two or three sets every year,” Trottie added.

Woods said: “That is correct. When I was playing full time, yes, I was. I had a fresh set to start the year. I would wear it in through Augusta and then played the first two majors. Augusta and at that time the US Open. Then I would have a fresh set for the British, because I wanted to bring it down again and have a good one for the PGA. Then at the back end of the Fall season I would switch up again. I used to hit a lot of golf balls!

“I was changing it probably once every month and a half, two months. Maybe a couple of tournaments and then it was out and gone, especially if I was playing bunker shots,” Woods added when asked about his 60 degree wedge.

How long Tiger Woods is expected to be sidelined for

Obviously, there is a question mark over Woods’ immediate future. He is not at The Masters this week after recently rupturing his Achilles.

Woods’ body has dealt with so much punishment that it is inevitable that fans would ask whether he can really return in the future. Unfortunately, he had an incredibly difficult year in the majors in 2024, missing three cuts.

The concern is that Woods could miss the rest of the year, by which time he will have turned 50 and will be eligible for the Champions Tour.

Hopefully, Woods has reason to get through plenty more sets of clubs before he calls time on his incredible career. He is certainly one player you can never write off.
