One of the most intriguing aspects about the launch of TGL concerned just how Tiger Woods would interact with his opponents, particularly in an environment where everything he says can be broadcast to everyone watching at home.

It is rare that golf fans get a real glimpse into what Tiger Woods is like behind the scenes. Woods is not someone who gives loads of interviews. And when he does speak to the media, he seems to rarely stray from giving the most unsurprising answers you could imagine.

Woods would ignore his rivals down the stretch at tournaments. It played a part in establishing himself the 15-time major champion as perhaps the best competitor of his generation.

He has shown a different side to himself since his time at the top of the game ended – and part of that has seemingly been becoming much more invested in the team dynamic at the Ryder Cup.

What Tiger Woods said when Brooks Koepka hit a shank at the 2016 Ryder Cup

Many would have been surprised when Woods was named as a vice-captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. Perhaps Brooks Koepka wishes that he had not been there that week at Hazeltine following one particular moment.

Koepka hit a shank on Saturday morning while playing alongside Brandt Snedeker. It proved to be a successful match against Henrik Stenson and Matthew Fitzpatrick. But that did not stop Woods poking fun at Koepka after his moment to forget on the 12th hole, as the five-time major champion told Fore Play Golf.

“I hit a shank at the Ryder Cup too. This was bad. The best part about it was Tiger walked up to me, you know how they’ve all got the earpieces in, and he walked up and he was like, ‘hey, no big deal, shake it off, just 10 million watched you shank it, no big deal’. And I was like, ‘thanks man, appreciate that’,” he said.

“Then he gives it this, with the earpiece, and he’s like, ‘no, no, no, no, 10 million people just got to watch it in slow-mo, so you’re good’.”

How Koepka has fared at the Ryder Cup across his career

Koepka seems to have a very mixed relationship with the Ryder Cup. Hazeltine actually proved to be extremely successful as only Patrick Reed won more points than him for USA as they regained the trophy for the first time since 2008.

And he won two of his four matches at Whistling Straits. However, he has won three points from seven matches on European soil, and he was on the receiving end of a record defeat alongside Scottie Scheffler in Rome.

Of course, Woods is no stranger himself to a very mixed Ryder Cup record. So perhaps he sensed that lightening the mood would help bring out the best out of one of the American players with the most potential that week.
