Three outsiders who could win the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village this week

The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club is upon us – and a stacked field has descended on Dublin for the PGA Tour signature event.

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy are the headline names as the world’s best look to fine-tune their games ahead of the U.S. Open, which gets underway next week.

Viktor Hovland was victorious in 2023, beating Denny McCarthy in a pulsating play-off, with Scheffler finishing one shot back in third.

Of course, there’s every chance of the big names dominating the leaderboard this week, but an outside shot cannot be ruled out – and here, The Golfing Gazette takes a look at three players who could land an unlikely victory at Muirfield Village this week.

Tom Kim

Korean sensation Tom Kim is trending in the right direction ahead of the Memorial after enduring a tough start to 2024.

The 21-year-old is coming off a T4 finish at the Canadian Open and also came inside the top 30 at the PGA Championship.

After bursting onto the tour in the 2021/22 season, Kim needs to start competing regularly with the world’s best and is certainly due another victory.

One who could be an outside shot this week.

Mackenzie Hughes

Canadian Mackenzie Hughes finished T7 at the Canadian Open and could build on his performance at Hamilton Golf and Country Club this week.

Before missing the cut at the PGA Championship, Hughes finished in the top ten at the Wells Fargo Championship, another challenging signature event.

Recent performances have been promising, and another top-five finish shouldn’t be ruled out at Muirfield Village.

Sepp Straka

It’s about time Austrian Sepp Straka properly threatened the leaders after competing regularly in 2024.

Straka finished T16 at The Masters, T8 at the Wells Fargo and T5 at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The missed cut at the PGA Championship is a concern, but overall, the signs are suitable for the 31-year-old.

Looking away from the well-fancied players, Straka has as good a shot as any heading to Muirfield Village.
