The Ryder Cup has been a fiercely contested competition between Europe and the United States throughout the years.

However, a concerning pattern has developed for America at the Ryder Cup over the past few decades.

The United States have not won an away Ryder Cup since 1993. During that period, Europe have won four times – 1995, 2004, 2012, 2025.

Europe’s Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black last week should have been a major wake-up call for not only the PGA of America, but the PGA Tour’s biggest American stars as well.

Europe are finding ways to win away from home while the US continue to struggle.

Adare Manor in 2027 represents a huge opportunity for America but things have to change ahead of the showdown in Ireland.

And the onus will very much be on the players ahead of the 46th edition of the Ryder Cup.

A new Ryder Cup think-tank, so to speak, should be created moving forward.

There is definitely a need for some of the successful recent captains to be involved in the setup.

Steve Stricker, Paul Azinger and Davis Love III all led their teams to success over the past nine years.

However, one thing none of them have done is win away from home. So why the European dominance since 1993?

The reason is obvious in my opinion. None of the top American players make the effort to travel over to Europe to play in tournaments.

That is the complete opposite to the European team.

All 12 members of Luke Donald’s side play regularly in the United States and the same can be said of the European Ryder Cup teams stretching back all the way to 2004.

Back in the day, traveling to America was a huge deal for the Europeans. They never played on greens as fast or in rough as thick and gnarly.

Nowadays though, it’s no bother for the European team to play in America – that is where they play the majority of their golf anyway.

I’m not suggesting that the best American players all become DP World Tour members but would it hurt them to play two or three events in Europe every year?

The likes of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have been supporting the DP World Tour since their moves to LIV.

Now it’s the turn of Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and co to do the same.

United States away results in the Ryder Cup since 1993

The US need to find a way of becoming more competitive in the Ryder Cup in general, but specifically away from home.

Without a victory on foreign soil in 32 years, things have to change. Europe have won four away Ryder Cups during the time after all.

Greater preparation is needed moving forward.

All of the top 15-20 American players should make a concerted effort to play more on the DP World Tour, if they are genuinely interested in turning the tide in the Ryder Cup, of course.

If nothing changes, the United States will continue to struggle when playing away from home in the Ryder Cup.
