Golf is hard enough when you’re making pars and bogeys but if you suffer the nightmare Matthieu Pavon did at this week’s Canadian Open, then things are nigh on impossible.

Pavon was looking to get his second round off to a flying start over at TPC Toronto this week but had the mother of all nightmares right from the opening hole.

The Frenchman teed it up on the par four first hole but his tournament was over before it even got going in round two.

Pavon fired his first shot into the rough, before he chipped out and advanced the ball just 75 yards over his next two shots. From there, Pavon inexplicably found the water three times while attempting the same shot, before finally getting the ball onto the green and rolling in a putt for a 12!

It means Pavon now sits among the players to have the worst ever scores on a single hole. Albeit, he still isn’t number one on that list.

The highest scores on a single golf hole as Matthieu Pavon struggles in Canada

It takes some doing for a professional golfer to score double figures on a single hole but alas, here we are again with Pavon.

However, while Pavon will not look back on his 12 with any sort of joy, he’s still not even in the top 10 for worst ever scores.

The honour for worst score ever goes to Tommy Armour, who somehow knocked a 23 on a single hole at the 1927 Shawnee Open after hitting 10 balls out of bounds.

In terms of the biggest names on the list, Jon Daly is right up the list with his 18 at the 1998 Bay Hill invitational. Daly tried six times to get the ball over the water, seemingly determined to conquer his nemesis hole.

In more recent times, Kevin Na made a 16 at the 2011 Valero Open, while John Daly features again on the list, with his 14 at the US Open in 2000 another notable failure.

The most recent player to shoot worse than Pavon’s 12 is Si Woo Kim, who carded a 13 at the 2021 FedEx St Jude.

For Matthieu Pavon, then, it seems like there’s at least some comfort in him
