When it comes to greats in the current game, there are arguably few better than Rory McIlroy, with the Northern Irishman essentially an ever-present in the top 10 in the world golf rankings for 15 years now.
Rory McIlroy will definitely go down as an all-time great. The 35-year-old has won four major titles, is the only person to win the FedEx Cup three times, and currently finds himself tied with Seve Ballesteros for six Order of Merit titles on the DP World Tour.
He may have gone a decade without winning a major, but McIlroy is arguably the most talented player of his generation. And with that, most golf fans can probably recall a round where he has managed to make it seem like he is playing a completely different course to everyone else.
With that, Data Golf can provide an insight into the best rounds of McIlroy’s career using their true strokes gained statistics. And here is the top five…
The five best rounds of Rory McIlroy’s career
5. Masters 2022
It is well known that The Masters is the one major McIlroy is yet to win, with his best finish at Augusta National being a second place in 2022. McIlroy went into the final round in a tie for ninth, 10 shots back of Scottie Scheffler.
He was unable to catch Scheffler, but a final round 64 saw McIlroy leap into second place. He was one shot away from tying the course record in Georgia.
4. WGC-Mexico Championship 2019
It was to be another second place for McIlroy at the WGC-Mexico Championship in 2019. He flew out of the blocks with a 63 before Dustin Johnson took control of the tournament.
McIlroy made seven birdies and one eagle – and one bogey – but still ended up finishing five shots off the lead by the end of the week.

3. The Memorial 2014
Perhaps the reason McIlroy has not won more majors can be summed up by his performance at The Memorial in 2014 when he opened the tournament with a 63.
Ultimately, he finished in a tie for 15th after posting a 78 on Friday. The warning signs were there as he actually made a double bogey during the first round.
2. Wells Fargo Championship 2015
The course record at Quail Hollow belongs to Rory McIlroy after he shot a 61 during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship nine years ago.
It meant that McIlroy teed off for the final round with one hand on the trophy, and he ended up finishing seven shots clear of Patrick Rodgers and Webb Simpson. Those who finished tied for seventh found themselves 10 shots back of McIlroy.
1. Quail Hollow Championship 2010
There was a reason some may have expected McIlroy to beat Xander Schauffele when they teed off on Sunday at this year’s Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy has now won the event on four occasions during his career, with the first victory coming back in 2010.
McIlroy arrived in the big time with a four shot victory over Phil Mickelson. His 62 on Sunday gave him his maiden win on the PGA Tour.
