Ian Poulter is one of the very best players to ever do it for the European Ryder Cup team and Tiger Woods once compared him to a legend of the golf world after coming up against him.

Poulter is known as ‘The Postman’ for Team Europe and over the years has made some huge putts and delivered some massive moments to help Europe win.

Poulter’s infectious personality is often cited as one of the key drivers behind the success Team Europe have had and you only have to do a quick search online to see the passionate moments he’s delivered.

Still, it’s not just Poulter who has been a big player for Europe over the years.

Indeed, according to Tiger Woods, Poulter is very much in the same mould as another European Tour legend known for his grit and determination.

Tiger Woods once compared Ian Poulter to Colin Montgomerie

Of course, Tiger has come up against the best players the world of golf has had to offer over a near 30 year career so far.

But speaking after the ‘Miracle of Medinah’, Woods was complimentary towards Poulter and went as far as to compare him to European legend, Colin Montgomerie.

“I think Monty was probably the same way. Monty had a fantastic career and an even better Ryder Cup career. I think Poults is about the same,” Woods said.

“I don’t know, you’d have to ask him. I just play against him. I know that he plays well in this event, and he’s tough to beat.”

What is Ian Poulter’s record in the Ryder Cup?

Ian Poulter is synonymous with the memorable win for Team Europe at Medinah in 2012 where he helped inspire the Europeans to the most unlikely of wins.

But while it’s Poulter’s personality that shines through, his record is actually good as well in matchplay.

In his seven Ryder Cups, Poulter has won 16 points for Europe, with a 15-8-2 record in terms of wins, losses and ties.

Of those seven events, Poulter has been on the winning side five times, including in 2021 where despite losing twice alongside Rory McIlroy, Poulter came in clutch to see off Tony Finau in singles action.

Poulter has said he has little intention of being available for a captain’s slot in the 2025 event and with LIV and the PGA still arguing things out, it looks like Europe might be robbed of the chance of a Poulter captaincy any time soon.
