With the PGA Tour in their fall stage of the season and LIV Golf done for the year, the DP World Tour has had a much needed opportunity in recent weeks to steal much of the spotlight.

The DP World Tour has arguably been the biggest loser from the arrival of LIV Golf. While the PGA Tour was able to keep the majority of their best players, the DP World Tour seemingly found it more challenging to convince some of their biggest names to hang around against the riches on offer on LIV.

There is a partnership with the PGA Tour which has helped in some ways. But there is surely little question that the DP World Tour has also suffered; with their top 10 players now earning PGA Tour cards at the end of every season. Unfortunately, they do not have the star power to keep replacing those who get the chance to play across the pond.

The mistake the DP World Tour made ahead of their final events of the season

So this stage of the season has been so important for the DP World Tour. Since the Irish Open – where Rory McIlroy came agonisingly close to winning – the tour has been on a brilliant run of events. The likes of the BMW PGA Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship have also attracted marquee names which immediately elevate the interest. And the Genesis Championship this past week delivered a dramatic finish, with Byeong Hun An beating Tom Kim in a play-off.

It has certainly helped whet the appetite for the final two events of the season on the DP World Tour. McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott are just some of the names set to tee it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship next month.

At this stage of the season, that is a massive deal for the DP World Tour. And with that, it has become something of a head-scratcher that the DP World Tour have not scheduled any tournaments for this coming weekend.

Where are events being played this weekend?

The PGA Tour will also be taking a break, while LIV Golf has long been finished for the season. So those looking to get their golfing fix will have to seek out the Asian Tour event in Indonesia or the LPGA Tour’s offering in Japan. Both events have a handful of household names in the field.

Obviously, the DP World Tour is unlikely to be able to attract all of the biggest names for another regular season event after such a lengthy run. However, LIV Golf – whether they are liked or not – has shown that there is an appetite for innovation in the sport.

So the DP World Tour have arguably missed a real trick letting this week go by without scheduling some sort of event and further capitalising on the momentum they have finally been able to build at the back end of the season.
