Scottie Scheffler was among the USA players to massively underperform at the Ryder Cup as Europe lifted the trophy at Bethpage Black.
Keegan Bradley enjoyed being the USA captain despite defeat for the hosts, who were beaten 15-13 by Luke Donald’s Europe.
And remarkably world number one Scheffler claimed just one of his side’s 13 points, winning only one of his five matches.
Scheffler impressively overcame Rory McIlroy in their singles match, but that arrived after four successive losses on Friday and Saturday.
After a stunning season that comprised six PGA Tour wins, including two majors, he was unsurprisingly given a key role at the Ryder Cup.

Scottie Scheffler could face consequences for his poor Ryder Cup showing
But Scheffler dramatically failed to live up to expectations, losing his two foursomes matches and his two fourball matches at Bethpage Black.
And it’s a showing that could leave the American star facing consequences, with a handful of questions now needing to be answered.
One is a matter of fan support for Scheffler, which may have slightly decreased in the short term at least given how he failed to step up for his nation when it mattered most.
And that in turn raises the issue of confidence, with the world number one’s confidence certain to have been knocked after his disastrous week in New York.

Long-term, there may always be an asterisk suggesting he needed to improve at Ryder Cups over his career given his overall record.
He’s more than answered the call on an individual level on the PGA Tour, with six wins this season alone, but the team format is one that really may not suit the iconic figure.
Importantly, however, if there is a player who absolutely can ask any questions asked of him, it is Scheffler.
Scottie Scheffler’s entire Ryder Cup history after Bethpage Black struggles
The world number one would have been desperate to put things right early on at Bethpage, but Scheffler suffered a historically bad Ryder Cup start.
And while the American scoring at the latest Ryder Cup in general really doesn’t paint a pretty picture, it is particularly damning for Scheffler.
He was one of three home players to play all five matches in New York, alongside Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay.
And while they also struggled, the duo each claimed 1.5 points compared to the one secured by Scheffler.
Equally worrying was that only Russell Henley, Collin Morikawa and Harris English scored fewer, with that trio each winning half a point, and all three having played fewer matches than Scheffler.
Such Ryder Cup struggles are nothing new for the American, who now has a 3-6-3 record from his 12 matches.
| Win | Loss | Tie | Points | |
| Overall | 3 | 6 | 3 | 4.5 |
| Foursomes | 0 | 4 | 0 | 0 |
| Four-ball | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Singles | 2 | 0 | 1 | 2.5 |
He’s represented his side on three occasions, with one team win and two losses to his name after his latest appearance.
Scheffler can, however, take plenty of heart from Tiger Woods’s poor Ryder Cup record, with the latter having gone down in golfing history despite failing to really turn up for the USA throughout his career.
