The Genesis Invitational takes place at Riviera this week, in what is one of the most star-studded tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar.
And despite Viktor Hovland‘s recent struggles, he should have a fantastic chance to win at Riviera this week due to his magnificent performances with his iron play in two very specific categories.
The Genesis Invitational definitely has a Hollywood feel about it, partly due to Riviera’s location on the outskirts of Los Angeles, just north of Santa Monica.
Who is the greatest of all time?
Jack or Tiger…
Excitement around the event this year is building towards fever pitch after last year’s event was moved to Torrey Pines following the Southern California wildfires.
And after what has been a really difficult past two years, aside from his win at the Valspar Championship in March 2025, Hovland should be feeling very confident in his chances of returning to the PGA Tour winner’s circle this week.
The 28-year-old has earned a reputation as one of the biggest over-thinkers and tinkerers on the PGA Tour.
However, Hovland suggested he’s very happy with his swing at the start of the 2026 season.
Hovland changed the grip on his putter before the WM Phoenix Open and that has led to big improvements on the greens in 2026.

The problem for him right now is his driving. The seven-time PGA Tour winner has no clue whether he’s going to miss left, right or flush one down the middle off the tee.
There is one department of Hovland’s game that never lets him down, though. His mid-range iron play is almost unrivalled at the top level of the professional game, and that should stand him in good stead this week at Riviera.
Riviera’s statistical anomaly means Viktor Hovland could win The Genesis
Hovland is right up there with Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa as one of the very best iron players in the world.
However, there are two specific approach shot categories where he especially excels.
Hovland was inside the top-5 on the PGA Tour in 2025 in the proximity to the hole categories from 150-175 yards and 175-200 yards.
Now, there is a reason why those two statistics could be so important at The Genesis Invitational this week.

There is a unique statistical anomaly at Riviera which makes it unlike any other golf course on the PGA Tour.
Only 11.7% of all approach shots at Riviera come from 0-125 yards out. That is significantly lower than any other golf course which is regularly part of the PGA Tour schedule.
This means that wedge play from inside 125 yards will not be as key as it usually is in the biggest tournaments on Tour.
Instead, the focus this week should be on golfers who excel when hitting their mid-irons from around 150-200 yards.
Step forward Mr Hovland. He was ranked 1st on the PGA Tour in 2025 in approaches from 150-175 yards and second from 175-200 yards.
Should Anthony Kim be invited to play in The Masters in April?
The LIV star finished third at Augusta National back in 2010!
If he brings his normal iron play to Riviera this week, there is no reason why Viktor Hovland can’t win for only the second time since August 2023.
Viktor Hovland’s record at The Genesis Invitational
For someone who is so notoriously inconsistent, the Norwegian’s record at Riviera is extremely solid.
Interestingly, the only cut he has missed at The Genesis was in 2025 when the tournament was held at Torrey Pines.
He has played The Genesis Invitational five times and has recorded four top-25 finishes.
Out of those five appearances, he has recorded two top-5 finishes and has never been outside the top-20 at Riviera.
At Riviera, he has played 16 rounds of golf, averaging a score of 69, or two-under-par.
It’s almost impossible to predict how Viktor Hovland will perform on any given week on the PGA Tour, but this week at Riviera provides him with the best opportunity of playing well.
A win would do wonders for the European Ryder Cup star’s confidence right now, as it would prove to him that his swing changes hold up under pressure.
And what better place for Hovland to get his mojo back than Riviera at The Genesis Invitational?
