Has there ever been a more eagerly anticipated PGA Championship as the one lying in wait at Quail Hollow next week?
I would suggest almost definitely not. There are so many storylines building, and Justin Thomas will undoubtedly be one of the chief protagonists at The PGA Championship.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler will be the favourites to win the Wanamaker Trophy.
Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau has been in red-hot form on LIV Golf as well, whilst Jordan Spieth heads into the second major of the year with the chance to emulate McIlroy by completing the Grand Slam.
Scheffler has been resting up at home ahead of the PGA Championship, after skipping the Truist Championship.
Meanwhile, McIlroy is still in with a chance of winning at Philadelphia Cricket Club, as is Thomas.
And the RBC Heritage champion has sent out a clear message of intent in Philadelphia this week.
Justin Thomas sends message to Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy ahead of the PGA Championship
Thomas has been in imperious form at the Truist Championship. Yes, he trails the leaders by three shots, but he’s still in a great position heading into the final round on Sunday.
All departments of his game seem to be in tip-top shape, with the second major of the year just around the corner.
Thomas has posted three very solid rounds of 66, 67, and 66 so far at Philly Cricket Club.
And his stats are looking ominous heading into the PGA Championship – a major that he has already won twice in his career.
At the Truist Championship, Thomas is ranked tied for 3rd in strokes gained total, 8th in driving distance, tied for 3rd in greens hit in regulation and 22nd in putts per GIR.
If Thomas is indeed peaking right now, he will be delighted with that. There are three major championships to be played over the next two months, and it would surprise nobody if he tucked away another one of the biggest prizes in golf.
It’s great to see him back to his best after his struggles over the past couple of years. It was only two years ago when he carded rounds in the 80s in both the US Open and The Open Championship.
In 2023, he missed the cut at The Masters, The US Open and The Open, and recorded a 65th-place finish at The PGA.

Thomas seems like a completely different player now though, and it will be impossible for Scheffler and McIlroy to ignore his fine recent form.
Justin Thomas’s 2025 PGA Tour stats
Thomas has been like a man reborn this season.
He certainly seems to have discovered some of his best form, and he got back in the winner’s circle three weeks ago at the RBC Heritage, after a three-year hiatus.
It’s little wonder why he ended his three-year wait for a victory this season, considering just how much he has improved since last year in numerous key statistical categories.
| PGA Tour statistical category | 2025 ranking | 2024 ranking |
| Strokes gained approach to green | 7th | 9th |
| Strokes gained putting | 20th | 174th |
| Strokes gained total | 4th | 25th |
| Approaches from 125-150 yards | 1st | 96th |
| Birdie average | 2nd | 32nd |
| Bogey avoidance | 44th | 48th |
The two-time major champion seems like a player who is totally in control right now.
And Thomas will fancy his chances of pipping Scheffler and McIlroy to The PGA Championship at Quail Hollow next week.
The 31-year-old seems to be peaking at just the right time, and his main rivals will be well aware of that fact after his showing at Philadelphia Cricket Club this week.
