It may alarm some American fans to know that you would have to go back to Medinah in 2012 for the last Ryder Cup in which Jordan Spieth was not involved.
Jordan Spieth will not be teeing it up at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black after an underwhelming few years on the PGA Tour. The three-time major champion failed to make it past the first FedEx Cup playoff event this season.
Keegan Bradley was warned that there would be uproar if Spieth received a captain’s pick for New York. So it was little surprise when he was overlooked.
Of course, the 32-year-old has had some amazing moments in the Ryder Cup. He formed a superb partnership with Patrick Reed before then having further success alongside Justin Thomas. Few will ever forget the shot Spieth hit at Whistling Straits in 2021 which left him flying towards Lake Michigan.
Jordan Spieth’s surprising results in singles matches at the Ryder Cup
Just three American players have won more points than Spieth in foursomes and fourballs since the Ryder Cup changed in 1979 to allow players from Continental Europe to take part.
| Player | Matches (Foursomes and fourballs) | Points | Overall record |
| Phil Mickelson | 35 | 16 | 13-16-6 |
| Lanny Wadkins | 24 | 14.5 | 14-9-1 |
| Tom Kite | 21 | 11 | 10-9-2 |
| Jordan Spieth | 17 | 9.5 | 8-6-3 |
| Tiger Woods | 29 | 9.5 | 9-19-1 |
But that makes his record in singles competition all the more surprising and perplexing.
Spieth was certainly handed a baptism of fire on his Ryder Cup bow at Gleneagles in 2014. Tom Watson sent the youngster out in the opening match to take on Graeme McDowell, the man who had sealed the crucial point four years earlier.
Spieth could have hardly asked for a better start, leading three up after five holes. He boasted the same lead as the match reached the turn. But that was where things started to go wrong for the American, with McDowell going on to win 2&1 as Europe retained the trophy.
His partnership with Reed helped put Davis Love III’s men in a phenomenal position two years later at Hazeltine. And once again, the pair were sent out in the first two spots on Sunday with Spieth taking on Henrik Stenson in match two.
No American lost by a larger margin that day, with the Swede winning 3&2. Of course, it did not hurt Love III’s men too much as they won the trophy for the first time since 2008.

The largest defeat of Spieth’s Ryder Cup singles career was to come at Le Golf National in 2018, with Thorbjorn Olesen stunning Spieth 5&4. Olesen had not played since the opening session after a loss alongside Rory McIlroy.
That would prove to be Spieth’s most recent defeat on a Ryder Cup Sunday. But remarkably, he is still waiting for his first victory.
He tied with Tommy Fleetwood at Whistling Straits in 2021 and Shane Lowry two years later in Rome. With that, Spieth’s overall record in singles competition in the Ryder Cup is 0-3-2.
Jordan Spieth’s concerning record is not confined to the Ryder Cup
Obviously, Spieth is not the force he was a decade ago. His worst finish in a major in 2015 was fourth as he won both The Masters and the US Open.
But given that matchplay should play to his strengths – with wild shots generally proving less costly – it is a real surprise that Spieth is yet to win on a Sunday at the Ryder Cup.
His record becomes even more bizarre if you factor in that he has only won one of his four singles matches in the Presidents Cup, too.
In truth, Bradley was given plenty of reasons to not consider Spieth for his team for Bethpage anyway. But clearly, his record in the singles would have done him no favours whatsoever.
